Chapter 21 - THE STORAGE UNIT

Susan left behind a storage-unit payment.

Investigators found it through records recovered from the clinic computer.

A warrant was obtained.

I did not go.

I waited at Rachel’s office with Daniel.

The call came two hours later.

Inside the unit were boxes of Mercer family papers.

Copies of Bennett records.

Old photographs.

Hospital documents.

And a wall-sized chronology of our family.

Daniel.

Charles.

Margaret.

Jonathan.

Vanessa.

Emily.

Me.

Lily.

The obsession was physical now.

But the most important evidence was digital.

A laptop contained drafts of every anonymous message Vanessa received.

The fake Harbor Genetics report.

My forged cord-blood authorization.

Research on my pregnancy.

Instructions for obtaining temporary hospital access.

Photographs of my home.

The evidentiary question was no longer whether Susan had created the baby-switch lie.

She had.

Major payoff.

Then investigators found something that made me sit down.

A folder labeled PIT.

Created three weeks before Vanessa put Lily there.

Inside were photographs of the Bennett estate backyard.

Including the unfinished landscape pit.

Daniel stared at me.

“She planned it.”

Maybe.

Then we opened the notes.

They did not say PUT LILY IN PIT.

They documented locations where Vanessa frequently spent time alone at the estate.

Garden.

Pool house.

Patio.

Driveway.

Susan had been studying opportunities to confront her.

Vanessa’s specific act remained Vanessa’s choice.

But Susan had been watching the property.

Then one unsent draft appeared:

VANESSA NEEDS A CRISIS BIG ENOUGH TO FORCE THE DNA ISSUE INTO PUBLIC.

My skin went cold.

She wanted escalation.

She did not specify how.

Vanessa supplied the violence herself.

That nuance mattered legally and morally.

Then another file answered why Susan waited fourteen months.

She originally planned to send the anonymous letter shortly after Lily’s birth.

She stopped because Margaret Bennett died.

Daniel looked confused.

“My mother died years before Lily.”

Wrong Margaret.

Susan meant Margaret Hale.

Vanessa’s paternal grandmother.

Another family name collision.

Margaret Hale had known Helen Mercer.

She apparently contacted Susan and warned her to leave the Bennett family alone.

Susan paused.

When Margaret Hale died seven months later, Susan resumed.

Every old relationship seemed to overlap.

Then investigators recovered Susan’s final travel reservation.

A train ticket to Pittsburgh.

Departure that evening.

Emily lived near Pittsburgh.

Police there were notified.

Emily remained in a secure location with friends and counsel.

Susan did not board the train.

Instead, surveillance showed her entering a bus terminal.

Another ticket.

Cleveland.

Charles stared at the destination.

“Why Cleveland?”

Daniel looked at me.

St. Matthew’s archived pathology storage contractor was headquartered outside Cleveland.

Susan wasn’t running from evidence.

She was going toward the last physical remnants of Jonathan’s case.

Helen’s original mistake.

Her mother’s shame.
