Chapter 20 - WHAT SUSAN WANTED

Susan did not want money.

That confused Charles more than anything.

“Everybody wants something.”

“She does,” I said. “She wants the story.”

Rachel looked at me.

Exactly.

Helen’s original file contradicted the Mercer family mythology.

Susan wanted control over it.

Maybe destruction.

Maybe possession.

Maybe the ability to claim the Bennetts had hidden it.

We did not give it to her.

The original remained secured through counsel.

A certified copy was offered again.

Susan rejected it.

Then she sent Charles a voice message.

“You kept my mother’s shame in a box for thirty-eight years.”

Charles listened twice.

Then he answered through counsel.

“I didn’t know I had it.”

Susan replied:

LIAR.

There was no reasoning with a person who treated contradiction as proof of conspiracy.

So we stopped trying.

The investigation focused on conduct.

The forged medical authorization.

Fraudulent DNA report.

Harassing communications.

Unauthorized use of medical information.

The entry into Emily’s condo, if evidence linked Susan.

The clinic computer.

The pink blanket.

Each item mattered because it was verifiable.

Meanwhile, Vanessa faced consequences unrelated to Susan.

Child protective authorities reviewed the pit incident after the medical report and my documentation.

Lily’s scrape was minor.

Her fear was not.

Vanessa admitted grabbing her and trying to collect DNA without parental permission.

She attempted to minimize the pit.

Then she stopped.

“I told her to stay there.”

That admission mattered.

“Why?” the investigator asked.

Vanessa cried.

“Because Claire was coming and I panicked.”

Not because Susan commanded her.

Not because of a secret biological right.

Because Vanessa wanted control.

Daniel’s face collapsed when he heard.

Whatever remained of their relationship ended there.

He moved out that evening.

Not into my house.

That mattered too.

I was not rewarding honesty with reconciliation.

Daniel had his own work to do.

Then Emily came to Ohio voluntarily.

The sisters met with counselors and attorneys present.

I was not there.

I didn’t need to be.

Later Emily called me.

“Vanessa apologized.”

“How do you feel?”

“I don’t know.”

Fair.

Then she told me Vanessa finally admitted something she had hidden from everyone.

After Emily’s baby died, Susan had given Vanessa a copy of the infant’s footprints.

Years—emotionally, it felt like years—of grief were attached to that card.

Vanessa kept it.

Six months ago, the anonymous letter arrived with another footprint card.

It looked identical.

That was what convinced her Susan’s story might be true.

She never showed us.

“Does she still have it?”

“Yes.”

Forensic comparison found the second card was a copy.

Not of Emily’s daughter’s footprints.

Of Lily’s newborn footprint record.

Someone had accessed Lily’s hospital chart.

Susan.

The manipulation was now undeniable.

She had taken a real piece of Lily’s identity and presented it as evidence of a switch.

Then St. Matthew confirmed Susan’s temporary credential had accessed exactly that record.

The technical trail was complete.

Susan had manufactured the central lie.

But when investigators went to her last known residence, she was gone.

Not vanished magically.

Her lease had ended two weeks earlier.

She had planned to leave before we understood the scheme.

📖 Susan’s fabrication was finally proven, but her planned departure showed she had expected the truth to surface—and had prepared one final move before disappearing. 👇
