Chapter 15 - MICHAEL’S BADGE

Michael did not run.

He asked for his lawyer.

That made Charles furious.

Rachel said, “That makes him sensible.”

She was right.

An innocent person could want counsel.

A guilty person could too.

We stopped interpreting ordinary legal caution as confession.

Michael’s attorney joined remotely.

Then Michael explained.

Fourteen months earlier, Susan contacted Harbor Genetics claiming she needed to deliver preserved pathology materials connected to the old Bennett case.

Michael agreed to meet her at St. Matthew because he was consulting there that week.

He sponsored a temporary visitor credential.

“Why didn’t you tell us?”

“I forgot.”

Charles scoffed.

“You forgot Susan Mercer?”

“I forgot the date.”

That was plausible.

Records would verify.

Michael said Susan never delivered pathology material.

She arrived carrying a document envelope, stayed less than twenty minutes, then left.

“What was in the envelope?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did she mention Claire?”

“No.”

“Lily?”

“She wasn’t born yet.”

Then hospital access records showed Susan entered the medical-records office.

Not labor and delivery.

That mattered.

She had not approached me physically.

She had accessed administrative systems.

The forged cord-blood request could have originated there.

Michael’s sponsorship gave her entry.

Not necessarily knowledge of what she did.

His mistake was carelessness.

Again, negligence creating opportunity.

Then forensic review of the cord-blood account produced a payment source.

A prepaid card purchased at a grocery store.

Security footage was gone after fourteen months.

Dead end.

Until Rachel noticed the account’s recovery email.

It used the name MARGARETB88.

Margaret Bennett.

Susan was deliberately invoking Daniel’s mother.

This was psychological.

She wanted the Bennetts to recognize old symbols eventually.

The baby bracelet.

The hospital.

The genetics lab.

Margaret’s name.

But why involve me?

I had no connection to the Mercer family.

Daniel did.

Lily did.

I was collateral.

That realization made me angrier than being targeted personally.

Susan had used my daughter because Lily was a Bennett child born in the same hospital where Jonathan died.

A perfect stage for reenacting an old grievance.

Then Michael offered access to Harbor Genetics’ historical archives.

Rachel accepted through formal channels.

There we found something Susan probably never expected us to see.

Her father Samuel had requested multiple copies of Jonathan’s old genetic report after Margaret’s death.

The last request came eighteen months before Lily was born.

Authorization attached:

Susan Mercer, executor.

She had been studying the Bennett case before I was even pregnant.

Then Daniel remembered something.

“Claire, when did Vanessa first meet Susan?”

Vanessa looked confused.

“I never did.”

Diane shook her head.

“Yes, you did.”

Everyone turned.

“At Emily’s clinic.”

Vanessa went still.

Diane continued.

“Susan was the administrator who brought you the paperwork after the baby died.”

Vanessa’s face drained.

Susan had direct access to Vanessa during the most traumatic moment of her life.

And months later, Vanessa received an anonymous letter specifically designed to reopen that grief.

📖 Susan had spent years studying the Bennetts, but her contact with Vanessa during Emily’s loss showed exactly how she selected the person easiest to manipulate. 👇
