Chapter 17 - HELEN’S FILE

Charles retrieved the file from a warehouse archive.
He did not open it alone.
That mattered.
Independent counsel documented the box, seal, inventory number, and contents.
No more family evidence passing hand to hand without records.
Helen Mercer’s disciplinary file contained twenty-three pages.
The truth was less dramatic than Susan’s mythology.
Helen had made the bracelet error.
She reported it herself.
The hospital investigated.
She received a formal reprimand and retraining.
She was not fired.
She resigned six months later.
The file contained no evidence Charles pressured the hospital.
No evidence Margaret demanded punishment.
No evidence the Bennetts destroyed Helen’s career.
In fact, Margaret had written a letter asking administrators not to terminate her.
Susan’s entire inherited grievance rested on a false family story.
Daniel sat back.
“Her mother was protected.”
Rachel corrected him.
“Partly. Helen still faced discipline for a real mistake.”
Right.
Nobody needed to become a saint for Susan to be wrong.
Then we found the missing piece.
A handwritten statement from Helen herself.
She admitted Samuel urged her to sue the Bennetts and the hospital.
She refused.
Samuel became furious.
He believed wealthy families should “pay for the damage they create.”
Helen wrote that Margaret Bennett had shown her more compassion than Samuel did.
Charles closed his eyes.
“Susan never saw this.”
Maybe.
Or maybe she saw it and rejected it.
We needed to know.
Investigators contacted Susan through counsel and requested an interview.
She declined.
Then she sent me an email.
YOU THINK A FILE MAKES YOU INNOCENT?
I didn’t answer.
Another:
ASK DANIEL WHAT HIS FAMILY DID TO MY FATHER.
I didn’t answer.
Then:
YOU’RE JUST LIKE THE OTHER CLAIRE.
That confirmed it.
She had intentionally conflated me with Claire Mercer.
Not because she literally believed we were the same person.
Because I had become a symbol inside a story she had been rehearsing for years.
I felt a strange clarity.
Susan wasn’t trying to discover truth.
She was forcing present-day people into roles from her family’s past.
Vanessa became Helen.
Lily became Jonathan.
I became Claire Mercer.
Charles remained Charles.
Daniel became the next Bennett man.
Once I saw that pattern, her actions became more predictable.
She would want the file.
Rachel agreed.
So did investigators.
We did not arrange some private vigilante meeting.
Through counsel, Charles offered to provide a certified copy of Helen’s file in exchange for nothing.
No bargain.
No confrontation.
Just disclosure.
Susan refused it.
That was revealing.
If truth were her goal, she would want the file.
She wanted control over the story.
Then forensic investigators recovered metadata from the fake Harbor Genetics report.
It had been created on a computer registered to the closed clinic.
Last known authorized administrator:
Susan Mercer.
The evidence chain was finally becoming concrete.
But the next discovery hurt me personally.
Susan had accessed my maternity registration before Lily’s birth.
She selected me deliberately from a list of expectant mothers.
Why?
My surname after marriage.
Bennett.
And my first name.
Claire.

I had been chosen before Lily ever took her first breath.
📖 Susan’s pattern finally explained why she targeted me, but the recovered clinic computer could prove whether she merely manipulated records—or planned the entire attack before Lily was born. 👇
