Chapter 10 - UNDER THE TABLE

The underside of the oak table had a concealed compartment.
I had eaten thousands of meals there.
Never knew.
Michael found the release latch.
Inside was an empty leather sleeve.
No ledger.
Only a note.
If this is empty, Vanessa found it first.
Emily’s handwriting.
My chest tightened.
Below that:
Check the sideboard clock.
We moved to the antique mantel-style clock on the sideboard.
I remembered my mother buying it at an estate sale.
Michael removed the back panel.
Inside was a microSD card.
Rachel smiled despite herself.
“Your wife believed in backups.”
The card contained photographs of every page of my father’s ledger.
Not the original.
But readable copies.
We did not open them casually.
Rachel had a forensic consultant create verified duplicates.
The ledger showed decades of questionable arrangements.
Some unethical.
Some potentially illegal.
Many too old to prosecute.
Thomas Finch’s name appeared repeatedly.
So did Vanessa Vale.
Only in later entries.
The final entry was written by my mother.
Vanessa took the original tonight.
Date:
One week before my mother died.
Vanessa had possessed the ledger for six years.
Then why keep searching?
Because the note continued:
She doesn’t know Emily copied it.
There was the payoff.
Vanessa had the original ledger.
She was hunting the duplicate evidence.
The cabinet letters.
The microSD.
Anything proving what she had.
Then we found an entry regarding a $90,000 payment.
Client restitution—V.V. theft covered by T.F.
Thomas had paid back Vanessa’s stolen client money and used that secret to control her.
Another entry:
V.V. threatens disclosure unless granted access to Carter successor planning.
Vanessa evolved from employee to threat.
But the ledger included something more personal.
Richard wrote:
Daniel remains sentimental and easily influenced by Emily.
I stared at my father’s words.
He considered loving my wife a weakness.
The next line:
If Emily gains influence over succession, Finch should intervene.
My father had authorized people to undermine my marriage.
Dead or alive, he treated me like a child.
Then an entry six months later:
Emily discovered continuity protocol. Situation unstable.
Signed T.F.
Not my father.
Thomas continued writing in Richard’s ledger after his death.
That meant parts of the “father’s plan” were actually Thomas expanding his authority.
The assumption shifted again.
Richard created control.
Thomas exploited it.
Vanessa exploited Thomas.
Emily fought all of them.
I asked Rachel:
“Can this reopen Emily’s accident?”
“Not by itself.”
She was right.
The ledger proved motive for secrecy.
Not homicide.
Then Michael found a filename on the SD card.
ACCIDENT.
Inside was one photograph.
Emily’s car after the crash.
The driver-side rear panel showed a long burgundy paint streak.
May you like
Vanessa drove a burgundy SUV at the time.
📖 The photograph suggested another vehicle touched Emily’s car, but an old insurance record showed the burgundy damage had been documented before the crash. 👇
