Chapter 6 - THOMAS FINCH

Thomas Finch had been my father’s financial adviser.

He attended my wedding.

He attended Emily’s funeral.

He held Sophie when she was three weeks old.

I read Vanessa’s letter twice.

Daniel still believes Emily died before she could finish the audit.

The next sentence was worse.

Keep the remaining originals away from Michael. He knows enough to become dangerous.

Rachel obtained Thomas’s current address.

He had retired to North Carolina.

I called.

He answered on the fourth ring.

“Daniel.”

“You know why I’m calling?”

Silence.

“Yes.”

That was enough.

“Did you know Vanessa before I married her?”

“Yes.”

“Did Emily?”

“Yes.”

“Did my mother?”

“Yes.”

“Did you alter my father’s trust?”

“No.”

“Did you know someone did?”

A long pause.

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

“Who?”

“Daniel, I need to speak to counsel.”

“You attended Emily’s funeral.”

“I know.”

“You looked me in the face.”

“I know.”

“Did Vanessa cause her accident?”

“No.”

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

“How do you know?”

“I don’t.”

“Then don’t answer.”

Thomas exhaled.

“I knew about financial misconduct. I did not know of any plan to harm Emily.”

That distinction mattered.

He agreed to speak through attorneys.

Meanwhile, the successor to Calder & Finch located the archived red safe inventory.

The safe itself had been emptied during the merger.

But a digital index survived.

Item 14:

Richard Carter Signature Ledger.

Removed by authorization: Thomas Finch.

Date:

Eight months after my father died.

There it was.

The mechanism.

Thomas had access to my father’s original signatures after death.

The same period forged amendments began.

Rachel looked at Michael.

“Do not assume that proves he forged anything.”

But it proved opportunity.

Then Thomas called back.

He had retained counsel.

He wanted to cooperate.

His attorney arranged a video meeting.

Thomas looked older than I remembered.

Tired.

He admitted removing the signature ledger.

“Why?”

“Your father instructed me before he died.”

“To do what?”

“Preserve flexibility.”

I almost laughed.

“Dead people don’t need flexibility.”

“He believed your mother might mishandle the trust.”

“My mother was protecting it from you.”

Thomas flinched.

Then he said:

“Your father never trusted Emily.”

That stopped me.

“What?”

“He thought she married you for money.”

I stared at him.

“That is absurd.”

“I know that now.”

Thomas admitted he used Richard’s signature templates to prepare continuity documents after death.

Some may have crossed legal lines.

He claimed Vanessa prepared drafts but did not control the scheme.

“Who did?”

Thomas looked directly into the camera.

“Your father.”

I shook my head.

“He was dead.”

“His plan wasn’t.”

Thomas explained that Richard had created secret instructions allowing trusted advisers to manipulate control of the trust if he believed I made “emotionally compromised choices.”

Emily qualified.

Then after Emily challenged the system, Vanessa became useful.

Not as architect.

As enforcer.

My dead father had built the machinery.

Others kept running it.

📖 I had spent years believing my father protected me, but his private instructions showed he had designed a system meant to control my marriage from beyond the grave. 👇
