Chapter 14 - THE HOUSE ACCOUNT

The breach was not sophisticated.
That made it worse.
My father had created a shared Carter family email archive years earlier for estate documents.
After he died, no one shut it down.
My mother used it.
Michael used it.
I occasionally forwarded documents there.
Emily used it during her audit.
Vanessa obtained the password while at Calder & Finch.
It had never changed.
For years.
She read our emails.
My grief.
Michael’s frustration.
My mother’s illness.
Emily’s concerns.
Everything.
She knew what phrases sounded like us because we handed her the dictionary.
The fake reference letter used one of Michael’s private expressions:
Steady hands in a bad room.
Michael had written that about an employee years earlier.
Vanessa copied it.
The assumption that she somehow understood me emotionally because we were “meant for each other” collapsed.
She had studied me.
But then I found emails from after we married.
Vanessa wrote to a friend:
He’s kinder than I expected.
Another:
I hate that Sophie trusts me.
Another:
Sometimes I wish I had met him before all this.
I stared at them.
Rachel asked:
“Does that make you feel better?”
“No.”
It made things more complicated.
Vanessa may have developed real feelings.
That did not erase manipulation.
People are capable of loving someone and still exploiting them.
That was harder to process than believing every smile had been fake.
Then one email changed everything again.
Sent to Thomas nine months ago:
I’m done looking for Emily’s copies. Daniel doesn’t deserve this.
Thomas replied:
You don’t get to be done.
Vanessa:
Watch me.
Thomas:
Then I release the theft file.
Vanessa had tried to leave the old scheme.
Thomas threatened her.
Three months later:
Vanessa:
If you come near Sophie, I’ll tell Daniel everything.
Thomas:
You won’t.
That line troubled me.
Vanessa had protected Sophie from Thomas.
Then months later she withheld Sophie’s inhaler.
Contradiction.
Not innocence.
It suggested a deterioration.
Maybe fear turned into desperation.
Maybe she blamed Sophie for hiding Emily’s evidence.
Then Michael found the next email.
Thomas:
The cabinet has to be emptied before Daniel returns from Dallas.
My business trip.
Thomas knew exactly when I would be away.
Vanessa replied:
I said no.
Thomas:
Then I’ll handle the child myself.
Two days later, I left.
The first baby-monitor clip showing Sophie in the maid uniform was recorded the next morning.
Vanessa had chosen to search rather than let Thomas enter the house.
That did not make the abuse acceptable.
But it changed the motive.
She was not simply tormenting Sophie for pleasure.
She was desperately searching for evidence before Thomas could.
Then I received a voicemail.
Unknown number.
Vanessa’s voice.
“Daniel, I need to talk before Thomas realizes you found the SD card.”
She was hiding somewhere.
May you like
And for the first time, she sounded afraid of someone other than me.
📖 Vanessa offered to tell me everything, but only if I agreed to meet without Michael or the police—and that demand forced me into my first serious mistake. 👇
