Chapter 9 - WHY VANESSA MARRIED ME

Emily’s letter began:

Daniel, if Vanessa becomes part of Sophie’s life, it is not because she won.

It means she is still looking for something.

I read the line three times.

Emily believed Vanessa wanted access to a file my mother had hidden.

Not the trust.

Not money directly.

A ledger.

My father’s handwritten record of off-book agreements.

Richard Carter had documented payments, favors, side arrangements, and names.

If exposed, the ledger could damage former business partners and trigger lawsuits.

Thomas wanted it destroyed.

My mother wanted it preserved.

Emily hid it.

Vanessa believed it remained somewhere inside the Carter house.

My house.

The home where Sophie and I lived.

That was why Vanessa married me.

Access.

Not necessarily the only reason.

But a central one.

I felt physically sick.

Every memory became contaminated.

Our first dinner.

The weekend in Charleston.

The way she encouraged me not to sell the house after Emily died.

“I love the history here,” she had said.

History.

She had been searching it.

Emily wrote:

She thinks I hid the ledger behind something only Sophie can access later.

I stopped.

Sophie had not been born yet.

“How?”

Elaine pointed to another page.

Emily planned to create a future custodial archive tied to Sophie’s personal items.

If anything happened to Emily, certain records would transfer to a trustee until Sophie turned eighteen.

But Emily died before completing it.

The ledger disappeared.

Vanessa kept searching.

That explained the maid uniform.

The cleaning.

The cabinet.

Sophie wasn’t being forced to clean randomly.

Vanessa was searching the house while disguising it as household chores.

A seventeen-month-old could reach low drawers, crawl under furniture, and notice objects adults missed.

Vanessa had been using her.

I wanted to break something.

Rachel stopped me with one sentence.

“Anger is not evidence.”

She was right.

We needed facts.

Then Sarah called.

She had found video on a baby monitor cloud account.

I had forgotten the nursery camera still uploaded clips.

Vanessa had not.

Several recordings were deleted.

But older fragments remained.

In one, Vanessa knelt in front of Sophie.

“Where did Mommy put the papers?”

Sophie pointed toward the hallway.

Another clip:

“Show me the key.”

Sophie shook her head.

Vanessa grabbed her wrist.

Not hard enough to leave obvious injury.

Hard enough to frighten her.

“You’re going to help me.”

I stopped the video.

I couldn’t watch more.

Then Rachel said:

“Daniel, look at the timestamp.”

The clip was from four months earlier.

Vanessa had been searching long before my business trip.

I had been home.

In the same house.

And I had missed it.

That was my cost.

Then the final clip showed Sophie hiding something inside the sleeve of her toy rabbit.

Rachel retrieved the rabbit.

Inside was a tiny folded map drawn by Emily.

A floor plan of the dining room.
