Chapter 19 - SHE DID LOVE ME

Vanessa asked to make one statement directly to me through our attorneys.

I agreed.

Recorded.

Witnessed.

No secret meeting.

She sat across from me.

“I did marry you because Thomas wanted access.”

I already knew.

“But I stayed for a different reason.”

I said nothing.

“I loved you.”

I felt anger.

Not tenderness.

“Do not use that word to clean this up.”

“I’m not.”

She cried.

“I loved Sophie too.”

“You withheld her inhaler.”

“Yes.”

“You made her scrub floors.”

“Yes.”

“You frightened her.”

“Yes.”

“Then what does love mean to you?”

Vanessa looked down.

“Something I thought gave me permission to be forgiven.”

That answer stopped me.

Because it was the first time she described herself accurately.

She had loved us selfishly.

Conditionally.

She wanted love to erase behavior.

It couldn’t.

Then she admitted another betrayal.

Six months after we married, she found the microSD card behind the sideboard clock.

I stared at her.

“You had it?”

“For one day.”

“What did you do?”

“Copied it.”

“Then returned it?”

“Yes.”

“Why keep searching?”

“Because Thomas said Emily had another copy.”

There was always another copy.

Another fear.

Another reason to continue.

Vanessa then told me she had once planned to confess.

She wrote a letter.

The letter Sophie hid in her sleeve.

The same letter handed to me on the day I came home.

I had assumed it came from Emily because Vanessa panicked.

It didn’t.

It was Vanessa’s confession.

I realized I had never finished reading it.

The chaos had buried it among evidence.

Rachel retrieved the original.

Vanessa wrote:

Daniel,

I knew Emily.

I knew your mother.

I married you knowing things you did not know.

Thomas believes I’m still working for him.

I’m not.

I have tried to find every copy because I’m afraid of prison.

That is the truth.

Then:

I have also been cruel to Sophie when she hid papers.

I tell myself I’m protecting her from Thomas.

Sometimes I’m only protecting myself.

The letter was dated six weeks before my trip.

She had known she was becoming abusive.

She did not stop.

That mattered.

Awareness without change can become another form of cowardice.

I asked:

“Why didn’t you give me the letter?”

“I was scared.”

Of course.

Then she said:

“Sophie found it.”

That was why it was in her sleeve.

Sophie wasn’t carrying evidence for Emily.

She was carrying Vanessa’s abandoned confession.

The truth had been inches from me before I left for eleven days.

I asked the question that hurt most.

“Did you know I was leaving her unsafe?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

That was the betrayal I could not forgive.

Not the marriage setup.

Not even the old fraud.

She knew Sophie was unsafe with her.

And she let me leave anyway.
