Chapter 12 - THE WAREHOUSE RECORDING

Paul Mercer had kept quiet for six years because Thomas Finch paid him.

Not a fortune.

Twenty thousand dollars.

Enough to make silence easier.

He admitted it during a recorded interview with counsel present.

Emily arrived at the warehouse shortly after 6:00 p.m.

Vanessa arrived ten minutes later.

Thomas was already there.

Michael never came.

Paul confirmed the visitor log containing Michael’s name was false.

That cleared my brother from the warehouse completely.

Major payoff.

Emily confronted Vanessa and Thomas over forged trust documents.

Paul could not hear everything.

But he heard shouting.

Then Emily emerged holding her phone.

She told Paul:

“If anyone asks, I was here.”

He nodded.

Then Thomas followed and offered money.

Paul accepted.

His shame was obvious.

“What recording?” detectives asked.

Paul said Emily recorded the confrontation openly.

She told both Vanessa and Thomas:

“I’m recording this.”

Where was the file?

No one knew.

Emily’s phone was badly damaged in the crash.

Data extraction at the time focused on calls and texts.

Not deleted audio.

Technology had improved since then.

Police obtained the archived forensic image of the phone.

A digital specialist found a partially recoverable audio file.

We did not receive it immediately.

Chain of custody mattered.

Authentication mattered.

Days passed.

During those days, Sophie woke less often.

I replaced the maid uniform with normal clothes and threw nothing away.

The uniform remained evidence.

I hated seeing it.

But destroying it would satisfy emotion at the expense of truth.

Then the recording was recovered.

Emily’s voice:

“You forged Daniel’s signature.”

Thomas:

“We maintained continuity.”

Emily:

“You stole authority.”

Then Vanessa:

“You think Daniel will choose you over his father?”

Emily laughed.

“His father is dead.”

Vanessa replied:

“Exactly.”

My skin went cold.

The argument continued.

Emily accused Vanessa of taking Richard’s ledger.

Vanessa denied it.

Thomas told Emily to stop.

Then Emily said:

“I already copied everything.”

Silence.

Vanessa:

“Where?”

Emily:

“Somewhere you’ll never find.”

Then a chair scraped.

Vanessa:

“You have a baby coming. Think carefully.”

Emily:

“Don’t threaten my daughter.”

Sophie had not yet been born.

Vanessa:

“I’m telling you what happens when families fall apart.”

The recording ended before anyone left.

No murder confession.

No explicit plan.

But the threat to Sophie was real.

Then detectives told me something unexpected.

Emily had another recording.

A shorter file created thirty-eight minutes later.

This one was made inside her car.

Her voice was shaking.

She said:

“Thomas is following me.”

Not Vanessa.

May you like

Thomas.

📖 For the first time, the evidence pointed away from Vanessa in the moments before Emily’s crash—and toward Thomas Finch. 👇
