Chapter 4 - MICHAEL’S SIGNATURE

Michael arrived forty minutes later.

He took one look at the cabinet and said:

“Where did you get the key?”

Not:

What is this?

Not:

Why are Emily’s letters here?

He knew.

I felt anger rise.

“You knew about this.”

Michael sat down.

“Yes.”

“Since when?”

“Since Mom died.”

Six years.

My brother had known about a locked cabinet containing letters from my dead wife and mother for six years.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Mom made me promise.”

“Why?”

Michael looked toward Vanessa.

“She was afraid Daniel would confront the wrong person too early.”

Vanessa laughed.

“Convenient.”

Michael ignored her.

He told me our mother discovered irregularities in the Carter Trust while receiving treatment for cancer.

She asked Emily to review documents privately.

Emily found signatures that looked genuine but had been assembled from scanned closing records.

One belonged to me.

One belonged to Michael.

Michael pulled a folder from his bag.

He had kept copies.

The same forged amendment I had just seen.

Successor trustee: Vanessa Vale.

My stomach turned.

“This was before we married.”

“Yes.”

“Before we met.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“That document was never filed.”

Michael looked at her.

“Because Emily stopped it.”

There it was.

A first payoff.

Emily’s investigation had blocked Vanessa from gaining control of my trust years before Vanessa entered my life romantically.

But that created a bigger question.

Why did Vanessa marry me later?

Vanessa folded her arms.

“I was told to prepare that amendment. I didn’t create it.”

“Who told you?”

“Your mother.”

Michael stood.

“No.”

“You weren’t there.”

“I have Mom’s letters.”

“Letters can be misunderstood.”

I interrupted.

“Enough.”

Then I saw something on the document.

Witness signature.

Michael Carter.

“Did you sign this?”

“No.”

“You’re sure?”

He looked offended.

Then ashamed.

“I signed blank trust acknowledgment forms for Mom sometimes.”

My anger changed direction.

“You did what?”

“She was sick. She asked me to help with paperwork.”

“And someone used your signature.”

“Yes.”

Michael had created the opening.

Not intentionally.

But carelessly.

Vanessa had access.

My mother had warned him.

Emily had investigated.

No one had told me.

The entire family had decided I was better protected by ignorance.

Then Michael gave me something worse.

A voicemail from Emily.

Recorded two days before her crash.

Her voice shook.

“Michael, Vanessa found out I copied the Calder files. She says if I tell Daniel, she’ll make sure Sophie loses everything.”

Sophie had not been born yet.

Emily was seven months pregnant.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You threatened my unborn child.”

Vanessa’s face went white.

“That recording is incomplete.”

Michael shook his head.

“No. It isn’t.”

Then Emily’s voice continued:

“She says Daniel’s father already agreed.”

My father had been dead for four years.

Someone had been using his authority after death.

📖 Emily’s voicemail proved Vanessa threatened my unborn daughter, but the reference to my dead father led us toward a fraud that began long before Vanessa entered the Carter family. 👇
