Chapter 15 - THE MEETING I SHOULDN’T HAVE TAKEN

I met Vanessa.
That was my mistake.
I told Rachel afterward.
Not before.
Vanessa chose a public hotel café.
Cameras everywhere.
People nearby.
I convinced myself that made it safe.
She looked exhausted.
No makeup.
No burgundy blouse.
No arrogance.
“Where is Sophie?”
“Safe.”
“Does she hate me?”
“She’s seventeen months old.”
Vanessa looked down.
“I know.”
I put my phone on the table.
“Why did you take her inhaler?”
Her eyes filled.
“I wanted the letter.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“I panicked.”
“She couldn’t breathe.”
“I thought she was exaggerating.”
“She’s a baby.”
“I know.”
Her voice broke.
No excuse.
That mattered.
Then she told me about Thomas.
After Emily died, Thomas controlled Vanessa through evidence of her old theft and participation in forged documents.
When Vanessa married me, Thomas wanted her to locate every copy of Richard’s ledger.
She agreed.
At first.
Then Sophie grew older.
Vanessa claimed she began resisting.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I would lose everything.”
“You nearly killed my daughter protecting yourself.”
She flinched.
“Yes.”
At least she didn’t deny it.
Then she slid a key across the table.
Small.
Steel.
“What?”
“Safe-deposit box.”
“Whose?”
“Mine.”
Inside, she said, were the original Richard ledger and correspondence Thomas believed destroyed.
“Why keep them?”
“Insurance.”
Of course.
Blackmail again.
“Emily’s accident?”
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“I followed her.”
My chest tightened.
“Why?”
“I wanted to scare her into giving me the copies.”
“Did you force her off the road?”
“No.”
“Did you touch her car?”
“No.”
“Did you cut her off?”
“No.”
“Then what happened?”
“She accelerated. I followed. Then she suddenly swerved.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
“Did you stop?”
Vanessa looked away.
“No.”
That answer destroyed whatever sympathy had begun.
“My wife crashed and you drove away.”
“I was afraid.”
“She died.”
“I know.”
“You left her.”
Vanessa cried silently.
“Yes.”
There it was.
A terrible truth.
Not murder.
Cowardice.
Then she said:
“Thomas arrived before the ambulance.”
I froze.
“That’s impossible. He turned off earlier.”
“He came back.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I saw his car pass me after I turned around.”
Thomas may have returned to the crash site.
That could explain the Calder security photograph if something else happened.
Then Vanessa’s phone buzzed.
She looked at the screen.
Panic.
“We have to go.”
“Who?”
“Thomas.”
I stood.
A man approached from the hotel entrance.
Not Thomas.
Paul Mercer.
The warehouse guard.
He looked at Vanessa.
“You shouldn’t have called Daniel.”
Then he reached inside his jacket.
Security moved before I understood what was happening.
No gun.
Just a phone.
But on the screen was a photograph of Sophie asleep at Sarah’s house.
Taken that morning.

My mistake had exposed the fact that we were still being watched.
📖 The photograph proved Thomas’s network was still active, and protecting Sophie finally became more urgent than solving Emily’s death. 👇
