Chapter 11 - MY MOTHER

My mother, Elaine Jenkins, had not died in a house fire when I was fourteen.

Vale staged her death after she tried to remove Hannah and Rebecca from the program.

He kept her under another identity inside a neurological facility.

Thomas found her and removed her.

Now he used her to force me into a public confrontation.

He claimed she knew every original client.

He wanted her confession broadcast without medical evaluation or counsel.

Elaine appeared confused and weak.

She might not understand where she was.

Thomas called that another excuse for secrecy.

I called it capacity.

He demanded I enter the room alone with the master database.

Federal agents created a controlled meeting.

I refused to carry the database.

I carried a blank drive and told Thomas in advance.

No deception.

He accepted because he wanted me physically present.

The room was inside an abandoned emergency clinic.

Same layout as Trauma Room 2.

Thomas had recreated the beginning.

My mother lay on the bed with a clean fiberglass cast covering one arm.

He told me to open it.

I asked whether she consented.

He laughed.

“She built the first program with Vale.”

My mother opened her eyes.

“Sarah?”

I moved closer.

“Do you want me to remove the cast?”

She nodded.

Thomas’s expression changed.

The procedure became hers, not his performance.

I used the saw carefully.

Inside were old client ledgers and photographs.

No body part.

No device.

Elaine had hidden evidence inside the cast before Vale captured her decades earlier.

Thomas had not known.

She had preserved the truth using the same object later weaponized against children.

Elaine confessed to helping Vale recruit families during the program’s first years.

She believed experimental treatment could save children.

When she discovered the coercion, she tried to expose it.

Too late for many.

She named judges, doctors, police officers, and donors.

Thomas broadcast the confession.

With her permission.

For once, the exposure was informed.

Then federal agents entered.

Thomas did not resist.

He looked exhausted.

“I wanted them to see.”

Elaine answered, “You wanted to decide how they saw.”

He lowered his eyes.

Thomas surrendered.

My mother entered independent care.

Our reunion did not become instant forgiveness.

She had participated before resisting.

I had questions.

She had damaged memory.

We moved slowly.

The trial began.

Families of missing children filled the courtroom.

Some hated Thomas.

Some credited him for exposing Vale.

Both were understandable.

Vale blamed Elaine.

Elaine accepted her part and detailed his.

Martha testified about Lucas.

Clara testified about Thomas.

Marcus testified about Emily.

Rebecca testified about Daniel’s birth.

Hannah testified about Trauma Room 2.

I testified last.

The cast itself sat inside a sealed evidence case.
