Chapter 14 - PATIENT 15

DNA testing showed the man was Samuel Vale’s son.

My half brother.

His name was Jonathan Vale.

Elaine had given birth to him inside the program before marrying my father.

Vale raised Jonathan as a physician and identity backup.

Like Rebecca and Hannah, he existed between family branches.

Jonathan had undergone cosmetic procedures to resemble Samuel in middle age.

The plan was for him to assume Vale’s role if the founder died or disappeared.

He claimed Samuel had escaped prison by switching identities during a medical transfer.

The body declared dead belonged to another patient.

Jonathan refused to continue the replacement.

Vale’s remaining supporters poisoned him and delivered him to our emergency room as punishment.

He carried the final archive inside a surgical implant near his hip.

We asked his consent before removal.

He agreed.

The archive contained offshore facilities, surviving patients, and financial sponsors.

It also contained a live tracker for Samuel Vale.

He was traveling toward a private airfield.

Federal agents intercepted him before departure.

This time, independent biometric teams confirmed his identity continuously from arrest through secure detention.

No quiet medical transfer.

No unverified death.

Jonathan entered witness protection after testifying.

He did not ask me to treat him as a brother.

We exchanged medical histories.

That was enough.

The final international facilities were raided.

More children and adults were found.

Not all wanted biological-family reunions.

Some wanted names restored.

Some wanted privacy.

Some wanted prosecutions.

The survivor council created separate pathways rather than one mandatory version of healing.

Daniel began using his real name again.

He kept Ethan as a middle name because he had lived with it for four years.

Daniel Ethan Mercer.

Identity did not need to erase survival.

Clara became part of his support circle.

Rebecca wrote monthly.

Martha remained in prison.

My mother remembered enough to testify in international cases.

Marcus returned to nursing under supervision after completing sanctions.

He became meticulous about consent and documentation.

Thomas sent me one letter from prison.

I did not open it for six months.

When I did, it contained no defense.

Only one sentence.

I made Daniel’s pain impossible to ignore by making it worse.

That was the clearest account he ever gave.

Then Daniel asked to see the original cast before it entered a permanent evidence archive.

We showed it inside a secure room.

He touched the clean outer fiberglass with one finger.

“Can they destroy it?”

“The court needs to preserve part of it.”

“What about the rest?”

He chose.

The hidden device, preserved hand, and evidence sections remained.

The unnecessary fiberglass was destroyed.

Daniel watched through glass as it entered the medical-waste furnace.

No ceremony.

No symbolic speech.

Just an object losing the power adults assigned to it.

Then Clara found one final item inside the cast’s deepest padding.

A tiny audio recorder.

It had continued running after the lights went out.

The recording captured Martha whispering to someone during the blackout.

“He’s not Patient 9.”

A male voice answered from the corridor.

“I know.”

“Then who is he?”

May you like

The voice said:

“He’s Dr. Jenkins’s son.”
