Chapter 3 - ROOM 11

Federal agents reached the Vale campus before the recovery team could enter the hospital.

The abandoned institute sat behind rusted gates and dead trees, officially empty since the state closure.

Building 43 still had electricity.

Room 11 contained nine child-sized beds.

Eight were empty.

One held fresh restraints.

Cabinet 8 contained cast-making equipment, hidden transmitters, forged birth certificates, and medical records under false names.

Box 2 held the identities of children taken through emergency rooms, foster placements, and private schools.

File 17 belonged to Patient 9.

Ethan’s real name was Daniel Mercer.

He had disappeared from a playground four years earlier at age four.

His mother, Rachel Mercer, had been told he drowned in a river.

No body was recovered.

Rachel had continued searching until she died in a car crash one year later.

The crash report was signed by Detective Charles Hayes.

Lena Hayes’s father.

She stepped away from the investigation immediately and turned over her badge pending independent review.

Another detective took command, but Lena remained as Ethan’s identification witness.

Her father had worked security for Vale Behavioral Institute before joining the police.

He had closed missing-child cases connected to the program.

The corruption reached law enforcement.

Martha finally spoke.

Her real name was Martha Reed.

Lucas Reed was her biological son.

Samuel Vale promised to cure Lucas’s neurological disorder through experimental therapy.

Instead, Lucas died during a procedure.

Vale used the preserved hand to control Martha.

If she exposed the program, he would accuse her of killing her own child.

He forced her to take Daniel, rename him Ethan, and maintain the cast device at home.

“Why place Lucas’s hand inside it?” investigators asked.

“Samuel said grief makes people obedient.”

Martha’s explanation did not erase her abuse of Daniel.

But it revealed another victim turned into an enforcer.

The recovery team sent to the hospital never arrived.

Their van was found burning near the highway.

Inside were three sets of white coats and no bodies.

Dr. Vale had erased his own people before they could be captured.

Then Daniel’s surgery uncovered something beneath the transmitter.

A second implant.

This one contained a microfilm capsule.

The film showed handwritten patient numbers and locations.

Children were still alive in other facilities.

The final frame showed a hospital logo.

Saint Mercy Pediatric Center.

The building where I trained as a resident fifteen years earlier.

I remembered one locked basement wing and a physician who told us never to enter.

Dr. Samuel Vale had supervised my first year.

My own signature appeared on several archived medication orders.

I had unknowingly treated children from the program.

The case had entered my past.
