Chapter 9 - DANIEL’S MOTHER

DNA testing showed Martha was not Daniel’s biological mother.

Rachel Mercer was not either.

Rachel had unknowingly fostered him for six months before the staged drowning.

His birth certificate was false.

The master archive’s backup listed his biological mother as Clara Jenkins.

Our veteran nurse.

Clara nearly collapsed when told.

Twenty-nine years earlier, while working at Saint Mercy, Clara became pregnant.

Vale said the baby died during premature delivery.

No body was shown.

The child listed in that record would now be an adult, not Daniel.

Then the file revealed frozen embryos created from Clara’s eggs without consent.

One embryo was implanted into a surrogate eight years earlier.

Daniel was genetically Clara’s son.

The surrogate was Rebecca Jenkins.

My sister.

Rebecca carried Daniel inside a Vale clinic and was told the baby died.

Daniel had two women connected to his birth.

A genetic mother.

A gestational mother.

Neither had consented.

Vale later placed him with Rachel Mercer for a social-development comparison.

Then removed him.

Daniel became Patient 9 because his life crossed multiple branches.

Clara did not claim him immediately.

Rebecca did not either.

The truth was too large to turn into instant motherhood.

A child advocate explained the history carefully.

Daniel asked whether Martha was still his mom.

“She raised you for four years,” the advocate said. “She also hurt you.”

“Both?”

“Yes.”

“Does that mean I have three moms?”

“It means several adults are connected to your story. You decide what relationships feel safe over time.”

Daniel thought about that.

Then asked for Clara to read him a book.

Not as mother.

As Clara.

The first choice was small.

Thomas released another video accusing the government of hiding Daniel’s origin to protect hospital reputations.

The accusation was partly true.

Administrators wanted the reproductive crimes sealed.

Federal prosecutors overruled them.

Daniel’s case became public only in anonymized form.

His image remained protected.

Thomas called anonymization censorship.

We called it a child’s privacy.

Then Samuel Vale offered a plea deal.

He would identify Thomas’s supporters and all remaining facilities in exchange for avoiding life imprisonment.

Prosecutors refused full leniency.

Vale threatened to let implanted devices fail.

Technicians had already isolated the network.

His leverage disappeared.

For the first time, he looked old.

Not powerful.

Just a man whose certainty had depended on hidden systems.

Then David Cole entered federal custody carrying a current photograph of Thomas.

Thomas stood beside a woman in navy scrubs.

My face.

Not Rebecca.

Another sister.

Vale had created a third Jenkins identity.

And she was already working inside our emergency department.
