Chapter 5 - THOMAS

Thomas Grant had been eight when Clara helped him leave Saint Mercy.
He survived on the streets for two days before Vale’s staff recaptured him.
Vale told Thomas that Clara reported him.
Then raised him inside the program as proof that trust caused punishment.
Thomas became a doctor under a false identity.
He learned surgery, pharmacology, and psychological conditioning.
He helped build the modern cast devices.
The white-coated man in the corridor was not Vale.
It was Thomas.
He arranged Daniel’s arrival.
He planted Lucas’s hand.
He sent the recovery-team alert.
He burned the van.
Why expose the system he helped operate?
Because Samuel Vale planned to transfer control to another director.
Thomas wanted revenge.
But he did not trust police or courts.
He believed only public horror could prevent another cover-up.
Daniel was chosen as the messenger because his body carried evidence no administrator could dismiss.
Thomas had endangered him to expose Vale.
Clara blamed herself.
Thomas blamed her.
Neither view justified what he did to Daniel.
Federal investigators traced Thomas through medical-supply purchases.
He contacted me first.
“Dr. Jenkins, do you remember holding me down?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know what happened after?”
“No.”
“You never looked.”
The accusation was true enough to hurt.
“I should have.”
He remained silent.
Then I asked why Daniel had to suffer for my failure.
Thomas answered, “Because doctors only believe what they can cut open.”
He offered Samuel Vale’s location in exchange for immunity and control over the rescued children’s medical records.
Prosecutors refused.
Thomas threatened to release private records publicly.
He called secrecy part of the abuse.
I told him forced exposure could become another violation.
He laughed.
“You learned consent after the system touched you.”
He was right about timing.
Wrong about authority.
Daniel’s microfilm led agents to three active facilities.
They rescued eleven children.
Two had cast devices.
One carried another preserved body part.
Vale used victims’ remains as keys, threats, and identity markers.
Martha identified the objects as “family locks.”
Every controlled caregiver carried proof of a child they failed to save.
Then investigators opened a file titled JENKINS.
It contained photographs of me from medical school through the present.
Samuel Vale had monitored my career.
The final note read:
SARAH WILL OPEN PATIENT 9.
THOMAS WILL WATCH.
CLARA WILL REMEMBER.
MARCUS WILL CHOOSE.
The entire emergency-room event had been designed years in advance.
May you like
Marcus had not yet made his choice.
Then he disappeared from the hospital with Daniel’s removed cast.
