Chapter 10 - The Room Beneath the Garage

Detective Cole reached for the ring.
Claire closed her fist around it.
“No.”
“Give it to me.”
“If you bring police to the house with lights and sirens, Meridian will know.”
“Emily may be trapped underground.”
“And the room may be wired.”
Cole’s jaw tightened.
“You’ve been withholding evidence in a missing-person case.”
“I’ve been trying to stay alive.”
“You helped Brandon monitor Emily.”
“I thought he was building a custody case.”
“You gave him her messages.”
“He said she was planning to take Noah out of state.”
Emily’s recording continued playing from the phone.
“If Claire says she didn’t know, she may be telling the truth. Meridian never tells anyone the whole plan. It gives each person one job and enough fear to keep them quiet.”
Claire looked at me.
“I swear I didn’t know they were hurting Noah.”
I wanted to believe her.
But belief had already cost Emily eleven days and Noah years of fear.
Dr. Vale stood handcuffed beside the surgical table.
His eyes remained fixed on the ring.
“What happens if police enter the house?” I asked him.
He smiled.
“Ask Claire.”
Cole stepped toward him.
“What did you install beneath that garage?”
Vale said nothing.
The second surgeon arrived moments later. Dr. Carter reviewed Noah’s scans with him while officers secured Vale and the fake orderly.
Before Noah was taken toward surgery, I returned to the gurney.
He looked smaller beneath the hospital blanket.
“I have to go help your mommy,” I said.
“Are you leaving me?”
The fear in his voice nearly broke me.
“Dr. Carter will stay with you. Detective Cole will put an officer outside the operating room.”
Noah looked toward Claire.
“Don’t let Aunt Claire use the ring.”
Claire stiffened.
“Why not?” I asked.
“Daddy said only the red lady could use it.”
Patricia.
The false administrator.
Claire opened her hand.
The black stone’s light had turned from green to red.
A message appeared on Emily’s phone.
UNAUTHORIZED BIOLOGICAL CONTACT.
PURGE SEQUENCE AVAILABLE TO ADMINISTRATOR.
Vale laughed softly.
“Now they know you have it.”
Cole took the ring using an evidence cloth.
“Who is the administrator?”
Vale’s smile faded.
“You met her.”
“The woman with the red badge?”
“That badge was borrowed.”
“What is her name?”
He looked directly at me.
“She used to work in your courthouse.”
I searched my memory.
Hundreds of clerks, evaluators, attorneys, guardians, social workers, and judges had passed through the family division during my career.
One woman stood out.
Marian Cross.
She had been a court-appointed custody evaluator known for calm testimony and unusually detailed child interviews. She retired three years earlier after a complaint involving altered notes was dismissed.
Marian had evaluated Brandon and Emily during their temporary separation two years ago.
Her report claimed Emily showed signs of instability while Brandon appeared patient and protective.
The judge relied heavily on it.
So had I.
“Marian Cross,” I said.
Vale’s eyes confirmed it.
Detective Cole immediately sent officers to her listed address.
The house was vacant.
Neighbors had not seen her in months.
The phone map showed movement continuing beneath Brandon’s garage, but the signal was weakening.
Emily’s breathing became slower.
“We don’t have time,” I said.
Cole agreed to a silent approach with a small team. No sirens. No marked vehicles near the property.
Claire insisted on coming because she knew a secondary entrance through the storm drain behind the house.
Cole wanted her detained.
I wanted Emily alive.
We compromised.
Claire would guide us in handcuffs.
Before leaving, I kissed Noah’s forehead.
He caught my sleeve.
“Grandma, Mommy said the room listens.”
“What does that mean?”
“He whispered the answer.
“If you say her name, the red lady hears you.”
At Brandon’s house, Detective Cole, two officers, Claire, and I entered the wooded drainage channel behind the garage.
Claire led us to a metal grate concealed by vines.
The black ring unlocked it.
A narrow tunnel stretched beneath the property.
As soon as we stepped inside, Emily’s phone lost its connection.
The tunnel door sealed behind us.
A speaker clicked on overhead.
Marian Cross’s calm, familiar voice filled the darkness.
“Ruth, you always did bring private matters into court.”
A row of lights turned on one by one.
At the end of the passage stood Brandon.
He held a bloodstained hammer.

Beside him, Emily was chained to the wall.
