Chapter 8 - The Surgeon with the Black Ring

Dr. Carter shoved Noah’s gurney sideways before the elevator doors fully opened.
The metal frame jammed between them.
An alarm sounded.
Dr. Vale’s smile disappeared.
“Melissa, move the bed.”
“No.”
“He is bleeding.”
“And you’re connected to the people who injured him.”
One of the masked staff members stepped forward.
Dr. Carter raised the knife she had taken from the fake orderly.
“Come closer.”
The person stopped.
I had never seen a doctor hold a weapon before. She did not wave it or threaten wildly. She kept the blade low and her body between Noah and the hallway.
Dr. Vale looked at me.
“Mrs. Hayes, your grandson needs surgery within minutes.”
“How do you know his condition?”
“I have access to his scans.”
“You were waiting before the elevator reached this floor.”
“I was notified.”
“By the woman wearing a stolen badge?”
His eyes flickered.
It was small, but I saw it.
Dr. Carter saw it too.
“Where is Lauren Pike?” she asked.
“I don’t know.”
“Why did your employee carry a photograph of Emily?”
“He isn’t my employee.”
The fake orderly laughed from the elevator floor.
“You never remember us after the job.”
Dr. Vale looked down at him with disgust.
That reaction was real.
They knew each other, but the surgeon considered him disposable.
Claire pulled herself higher on the stretcher.
“Martin, tell her who paid you.”
He focused on her.
“You should be dead.”
“You left before checking.”
“Your brother was supposed to handle you.”
Brandon had put his own sister into the trunk, but someone else had injured her first.
“Why?” I asked Claire.
She held her bleeding side.
“I broke into the basement after Emily disappeared. I found copies of medical files, videos, and court reports. Brandon wasn’t only tracking Emily.”
“Who else?”
“Women from custody cases.”
My years at family court came rushing back.
Parents who suddenly appeared unstable. Mothers whose toxicology screens showed sedatives they denied taking. Children who changed statements after private evaluations.
I had processed those files without seeing the pattern.
“How many?” I asked.
“I don’t know. Dozens.”
Dr. Vale took one step toward us.
“You’re wasting time.”
“So talk,” Dr. Carter said. “What caused Noah’s injuries?”
“I haven’t examined him.”
“You were in Brandon’s basement.”
His calm cracked.
“I treated the child once.”
“For what?”
“A fall.”
Noah whispered, “He pushed here.”
He touched the bruised area of his abdomen.
Dr. Vale’s face went still.
“Who pushed you?” I asked.
Noah looked at the surgeon.
“The doctor pushed the board.”
I did not understand.
Claire did.
“The restraint board,” she said.
Dr. Carter’s eyes widened.
“You restrained a five-year-old?”
“He was interfering.”
“With what?”
Noah began crying silently.
“With Mommy’s video.”
The truth sharpened.
They had strapped Noah down while forcing Emily to record a false statement. Pressure from the restraint board—or from someone tightening it—had injured his abdomen.
Dr. Vale’s voice hardened.
“The boy was never supposed to remember.”
I lifted my recording phone.
“He remembers, and now you’ve admitted being there.”
His eyes moved to the glowing screen.
Then the two masked staff members rushed us.
Dr. Carter slashed the air near the first one’s arm without making contact. The person recoiled.
I shoved Noah’s gurney backward against the elevator wall and kicked the emergency panel. The alarm grew louder.
Claire reached beneath her blanket and pulled out a small black phone.
“The second one,” she said.
She pressed it into my hand.
Emily’s other phone.
“I hid it in the ambulance before they put me in Brandon’s trunk.”
The screen required a six-digit code.
“What’s the password?”
“I don’t know.”
Noah opened his eyes.
“Red sun.”
The drawing in the photograph.
I entered the date written beneath the red sun in Noah’s school picture: 061419.
The phone unlocked.
A recording app was already open.
The newest file was titled RUTH—DO NOT TRUST CLAIRE.
Claire saw it.
Her face lost all color.
Before I could press play, Dr. Vale reached through the narrowing space and snatched the phone from my hand.
He turned and ran toward the operating room.
Claire tore the IV from her arm and climbed off the stretcher.
“That recording will get Emily killed.”

She chased him into the dark hallway.
