Chapter 13 - The Father Meridian Wanted Hidden

Emily leaned against the wall.
“Not here.”
Brandon stared at her.
“You told me I was his father.”
“You are the man on his birth certificate.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
His voice rose, but Detective Cole stepped between them.
“This is not the time.”
“It’s exactly the time,” Brandon said. “They used that secret to control her.”
Emily looked at me.
“I never wanted Noah involved.”
“Who is his biological father?”
Her eyes filled, but she did not answer.
Brandon laughed bitterly.
“She still protects him.”
“I’m protecting Noah.”
“From his own name?”
Marian’s voice returned through a damaged speaker, distorted by static.
“Ruth, place the ring on the pedestal.”
Brandon raised the hammer toward the final working speaker.
“Tell her why.”
Marian ignored him.
“The administrator is inside your grandson’s operating room.”
The monitor showed Dr. Carter struggling with Patricia near the IV pump. The second surgeon continued working while another nurse pulled Patricia away from the sterile area.
Police officers appeared in the doorway.
Patricia shoved the nurse into them and ran.
The surgery continued.
Noah was not safe yet, but Marian had lost immediate control over his IV.
I kept the ring away from the pedestal.
“You no longer have leverage.”
Marian answered, “The surgery is only one room.”
The monitor split.
A second camera showed the hospital evidence locker.
The pink phone sat inside a clear bag on a metal shelf.
A person wearing gloves entered the room.
Only the hands were visible.
They held a portable drill.
Emily moved toward the screen.
“No.”
The gloved person began drilling into the evidence locker.
Detective Cole spoke into his radio, giving the hospital location and evidence-room number.
Marian said, “Your police response will arrive after the phone is destroyed.”
The drill bit pierced the lock.
We had less than a minute.
I looked at Emily.
“Tell me whose name Meridian fears.”
She shook her head.
“If I say it, the room records it.”
“The room is already recording everything.”
“No. The name triggers a search protocol.”
Brandon’s expression sharpened.
“What protocol?”
“Meridian locates every living relative connected to him.”
Claire stared at her.
“How many children are involved?”
Emily pressed a hand to her mouth.
“More than Noah.”
The conspiracy reached beyond custody manipulation.
Meridian was tracking bloodlines.
I remembered Dana Reeves, the mother whose case I had processed. She claimed her daughter had been taken after false medical and psychological reports.
Dana’s former husband was a prominent biotech executive named Adrian Mercer.
Mercer funded children’s behavioral research programs and court-appointed family services across Maryland.
He had also died six years earlier in a private plane crash.
“Adrian Mercer,” I said.
Emily’s eyes widened.
The basement lights turned red.
A computerized voice announced:
IDENTITY KEYWORD DETECTED.
SEARCHING ACTIVE DESCENDANTS.
Emily stared at me in horror.
“You shouldn’t have said it.”
Brandon looked between us.
“Mercer is Noah’s father?”
“No.”
Emily’s answer came instantly.
“Then why does his name matter?” I asked.
“Because Noah’s father exposed what Mercer was doing.”
“Who was he?”
She looked toward the camera.
Then she mouthed the name without sound.
I read her lips.
Daniel Reeves.
Dana Reeves’s older son.
The court files listed Daniel as deceased.
He supposedly drowned at seventeen, months before Dana began fighting for custody of her daughter.
But Emily’s expression told me he had lived.
“Daniel is alive?” I asked.
The computer voice interrupted.
ACTIVE DESCENDANT LOCATED.
The monitor changed to a live camera feed from Noah’s operating room.
A facial-recognition box formed around his face.
Another box appeared around a male nurse standing near the rear wall.
He wore a surgical mask.
The system identified him as DANIEL REEVES.
Emily screamed his name.
The man turned toward the camera.
His eyes looked exactly like Noah’s.

Then he reached beneath his scrubs and pulled out a hospital access card marked FEDERAL WITNESS PROTECTION.
