Chapter 12 - The List Inside the Ring

Brandon looked up at the camera.
“You lied to me.”
Marian’s voice remained calm.
“Emily is confused.”
“No,” Emily said. “I saw Vale use the ring.”
Brandon’s grip tightened around the hammer.
“You said the pedestal would delete everything.”
“It will.”
Emily shook her head.
“The ring copies the archive before any deletion. It sends the records to every registered witness account.”
My old courthouse credentials.
If I activated it, Meridian’s case list might be distributed through the county system under my identity.
That explained why they needed me.
But there was still a trap.
The same process could make it appear that I had created or stolen the records.
“Where would the files go?” I asked Emily.
“To judges, clerks, attorneys, police contacts—anyone Meridian marked as a witness or target.”
Marian interrupted.
“She has been deprived of sleep and medicated for days.”
Emily’s eyes stayed on mine.
“The first phone has the proof.”
“The pink one?”
“Yes. Noah took it from the basement after I dropped it.”
The phone found inside his jumpsuit.
It was already sealed as evidence at the hospital.
Marian could manipulate digital records, but she had not controlled the phone after Dr. Carter secured it.
“What’s on it?” I asked.
“Videos of meetings. Payments. Evaluations written before interviews happened.”
Brandon turned toward her.
“You recorded us?”
“I recorded everyone.”
His face filled with rage.
“You planned this.”
“I planned to get Noah away from you.”
“You were going to ruin me.”
“You strapped our son to a board.”
“That was Vale!”
“You held his legs.”
The hammer slipped lower in Brandon’s hand.
For a moment, shame crossed his face.
Then the speaker crackled.
“Brandon,” Marian said, “you know what happens to contractors who become liabilities.”
He looked at the red lights along the ceiling.
“You can’t reach me.”
“I reached Claire.”
His eyes moved toward his sister’s bloodstained blouse.
Claire said quietly, “She ordered him to put me in the trunk.”
Brandon’s breathing became uneven.
“You told me she sold Emily’s files.”
“She did,” Marian replied. “And then she tried to reverse the damage. Sentiment makes people unreliable.”
A mechanical sound came from the wall behind Brandon.
The panel beside him began closing around a set of electrical cables.
He looked up.
“You’re sealing the chamber.”
“I’m containing evidence.”
“We’re people.”
“To Meridian, there is no difference.”
That sentence changed him.
Not into a good man.
Not into a father worthy of forgiveness.
But into a frightened participant who finally understood that the machine he served would consume him too.
He turned the hammer around and struck the control panel beneath the camera.
The first blow shattered its cover.
The second exposed wiring.
Red warning lights began flashing.
“Stop!” Marian shouted.
It was the first emotion I had heard in her voice.
Brandon swung again.
Sparks burst from the panel.
Emily’s restraints released with a metallic snap.
The tunnel door behind us opened two inches.
Detective Cole’s officer forced his fingers into the gap and pulled.
Claire ran toward Emily.
I grabbed the ring from Cole’s evidence cloth and held it above the pedestal.
“What happens if I use it now?”
Emily struggled free from the chain.
“It opens the archive.”
“And the trap?”
“I don’t know.”
On the monitor, Patricia reached Noah’s IV pump.
Dr. Carter turned and saw her.
The two women collided beside the operating table.
The video feed shook but did not cut.
I lowered the ring toward the pedestal.
Brandon grabbed my wrist.
“Don’t.”
“You heard Emily.”
“I also heard Marian say she needs your signature.”
His eyes shifted toward the black recess.
“There’s a needle under the scanner.”
I looked closer.
A tiny silver point was hidden inside the biometric pad.
Not a scanner.
A blood collection device.
Marian did not only need my electronic credentials.
She needed my biological sample.
“For what?” I asked.
Brandon looked toward Emily.
“To prove Noah isn’t mine.”
The room became silent.
Emily’s face went white.
Brandon’s voice cracked.
