Chapter 4 - The Voice Inside the Car

Emily’s voice came through the phone again.
“Ruth… please.”
Static swallowed the next words.
I moved toward the doorway.
Brandon blocked me.
“That isn’t her.”
I stared at him.
“You recognized the voice.”
“It’s an old recording.”
“Then why are you afraid of me reaching the parking lot?”
He glanced toward the nurses’ station.
Every person there was watching now.
Dr. Carter lowered the head of Noah’s gurney and spoke to the second nurse.
“Take him to imaging through the staff corridor.”
Brandon heard her.
“No one takes my son anywhere.”
“He needs an abdominal scan.”
“I don’t consent.”
Dr. Carter’s face became cold.
“This is emergency care. I do not need parental consent to prevent serious harm.”
She moved the gurney.
Brandon stepped into its path.
I placed both hands on his chest and pushed him back just far enough for the nurse to turn the bed.
He caught my cardigan and nearly pulled me down.
I twisted free.
“Touch her again and I’ll document that too,” Dr. Carter said.
Brandon looked from her to the cameras mounted in the hallway ceiling.
He had lost control of the room.
Then he changed tactics.
His shoulders dropped. His voice broke.
“My wife disappeared. My son is sick. My mother is trying to steal him. I’m scared.”
The performance was almost convincing.
I had seen defendants use the same transformation in family court. Anger vanished the instant authority arrived. Threats became concern. Control became love.
The second nurse pushed Noah toward imaging.
He reached one hand toward me.
“Grandma!”
“I’m coming.”
Brandon grabbed the foot rail of the gurney.
Noah screamed.
Dr. Carter slammed the brake with her shoe and pushed Brandon’s hand away.
“Let go.”
“I said he stays!”
A deep voice came from the hallway.
“Take your hand off the bed.”
Detective Cole stood at the doorway in plain clothes with his badge visible. A uniformed officer was beside him.
Brandon released the rail.
“You’re finally here,” he said. “Arrest her.”
Detective Cole looked at the bruises visible through Noah’s opened jumpsuit.
Then he looked at Brandon.
“No one is being arrested until I understand what happened.”
“She kidnapped him.”
“I picked Noah up after he called me crying,” I said. “Brandon tried to take him before I could check his fever.”
“He’s lying about the call.”
Noah whispered, “I called Grandma from Mommy’s phone.”
The detective glanced at the evidence bag.
“Is that Emily Hayes’s phone?”
“We believe so,” Dr. Carter said.
Cole’s expression sharpened.
Emily’s disappearance had already become a police case, despite Brandon’s claim that she had simply left. I realized the detective had not told me that before.
The uniformed officer walked toward the parking lot with the charge nurse and Brandon’s phone.
Brandon moved after them.
Cole stopped him.
“You remain here.”
“That’s my property.”
“And possibly part of a missing-person investigation.”
Brandon’s eyes became flat.
“Emily isn’t missing.”
“Then where is she?”
“She left.”
“Her family says she wouldn’t abandon Noah.”
“They don’t know her.”
Noah’s gurney disappeared through the staff doors.
I followed until Detective Cole touched my arm.
“Mrs. Hayes, did Emily ever mention being afraid of Brandon?”
I hesitated.
Six months earlier, Emily had come to my house with makeup over a bruise near her ear. She said she struck a cabinet door. Brandon stood behind her while she explained.
I had believed what I was expected to believe.
“She told me he was under pressure,” I said.
“That isn’t what I asked.”
My shame answered for me.
Cole lowered his voice.
“We found a draft message in Emily’s cloud account written two weeks before she vanished. It was addressed to you.”
“What did it say?”
“It said Noah was seeing things he shouldn’t and that she planned to leave Brandon.”
“Why didn’t she send it?”
“We don’t know.”
A radio crackled at Cole’s belt.
The officer in the parking lot spoke urgently.
“Detective, the sedan is empty, but there’s blood on both front seats. Trunk is locked, and we can hear something moving inside.”
Brandon bolted.
He slammed into the detective, knocked a tray from the wall, and sprinted toward the emergency exit.
Cole recovered and followed.
I ran after them until Dr. Carter called my name from the imaging corridor.
Her voice stopped me.
“Ruth, Noah’s scan shows internal bleeding.”
I turned toward her.
Behind me, an alarm sounded from the parking lot.
Then the hospital lights flickered once, and every electronic lock in the pediatric wing clicked shut.
Dr. Carter looked toward the security panel.
“That wasn’t us.”
Through the glass doors, I saw Brandon standing in the parking lot beside his car.
Someone had already opened the trunk for him.
A woman with shoulder-length dark hair climbed out.
For one hopeful second, I thought it was Emily.
Then she raised her face.
It was Brandon’s sister, Claire.
