Chapter 2 - The Phone Beneath the Gurney

The vibration came again.
Dr. Carter stepped away from the wall phone and bent toward the sound.
Brandon lunged.
The nurse caught his chest with both palms, but he drove forward hard enough to force her backward. A metal IV pole rattled beside the bed.
“Get out of my way!” he shouted.
I moved between him and Noah.
“Don’t make another mistake.”
“You don’t know what you’re doing, Mom.”
“I know my grandson has bruises you tried to hide.”
“He falls.”
Noah flinched at Brandon’s voice.
Dr. Carter crouched and reached beneath the gurney.
Her gloved hand emerged holding a small pink smartphone with a cracked corner. A strip of clear medical tape covered part of its back.
The screen showed six missed calls from a contact saved as HOME.
Noah stared at it.
“That’s Mommy’s.”
My breath caught.
My daughter-in-law, Emily, had been missing for eleven days.
Brandon told everyone she had left after an argument. He said she emptied her checking account, packed a suitcase, and abandoned him with Noah.
I had wanted to believe him because the alternative was worse.
Emily had not answered my calls. Her parents in Pennsylvania had not heard from her. Brandon insisted she needed space and threatened to stop bringing Noah to see me if I contacted police.
Now her phone was inside a pediatric examination room.
“How did that get here?” the nurse asked.
Brandon shook his head.
“I’ve never seen it.”
Noah’s gaze remained fixed on the cracked screen.
“You put it in my clothes.”
The room fell silent.
Brandon stared at him.
“No, I didn’t.”
Noah’s lower lip trembled.
“You said bad people would find it.”
Brandon’s expression changed.
Not rage this time.
Calculation.
He lowered his voice and softened his face as if performing for an audience.
“Buddy, you’re confused because you’re sick.”
Noah turned his face toward me.
“He made me hide it.”
I touched his hair.
“You’re safe.”
“No, he’ll take me.”
“He won’t.”
I said it before I knew whether I had the power to keep the promise.
Dr. Carter handed the pink phone to the second nurse.
“Place that in a specimen bag. Don’t unlock it.”
Brandon stepped sideways, searching for a path around us.
“That’s private property.”
“Whose?” I asked.
He hesitated.
“Emily’s.”
“You just said you’d never seen it.”
His jaw clenched.
The nurse sealed the phone inside a clear evidence bag and wrote the time across the label.
Dr. Carter pressed the wall-mounted security phone.
“Pediatric emergency, Room Six. I need hospital security and the child protection team.”
Brandon grabbed the privacy curtain and yanked it aside so violently that the metal rings snapped from the rail.
Noah screamed.
The monitor beside the bed began beeping faster.
I pressed my body over him, shielding his face.
Brandon stopped at the doorway when two nurses from the station looked toward us.
Then he turned back with a smile that did not reach his eyes.
“This is all being misunderstood.”
Dr. Carter stepped in front of the bed.
“The child has injuries in several stages of healing.”
“He plays rough.”
“He also has a fever, abdominal guarding, and signs of dehydration.”
“He was fine this morning.”
Noah whispered, “I wasn’t.”
Brandon’s smile disappeared.
I slid my own recording phone fully from my pocket.
“I have you threatening him in the hallway and trying to stop the examination.”
He looked at me as if I had betrayed him.
“You recorded me?”
“I started recording when you tried to drag him out of my car.”
For the first time, I saw uncertainty break through his control.
He knew the hospital had witnesses.
He knew Emily’s phone had been found.
And he knew Noah had begun talking.
The pink phone vibrated inside the evidence bag.
A message preview appeared on its locked screen.
It came from Brandon’s number.
I COULDN’T FIND THE OTHER ONE. CHECK THE BOY BEFORE RUTH OPENS HIS CLOTHES.
The nurse read it aloud.
Brandon reached into his jeans pocket.
His own phone was gone.
Then Noah lifted one trembling hand and pointed toward the doorway.
A woman in white scrubs stood beside the nurses’ station holding Brandon’s phone.

She looked at him and said, “You dropped this in the parking lot beside a car with blood inside.”
