Chapter 14 - The Dead Man in the Operating Room

Daniel Reeves looked directly into the camera as if he knew we were watching.

He removed his mask.

He was in his early thirties, with light brown hair and a pale scar beneath his chin. Noah had the same narrow jaw and the same dark, watchful eyes.

Emily touched the screen.

“He came back for us.”

Brandon’s face collapsed into something between fury and humiliation.

“You knew he was here?”

“No.”

“You said he was dead.”

“He was supposed to stay dead.”

Daniel lifted his federal access card toward Dr. Carter. She glanced at it while the surgeon continued operating.

Then Daniel pointed toward the camera above the operating room door.

He knew Meridian had found him.

The feed flickered.

A warning appeared.

PURGE PROTOCOL INITIATED.

Every light in the basement chamber went out.

The monitor remained illuminated.

On-screen, the operating-room doors locked automatically.

Smoke began seeping from an air vent near the ceiling.

Marian’s voice returned through the damaged speaker.

“Active witnesses cannot leave.”

Dr. Carter saw the smoke.

Daniel moved immediately. He pulled an oxygen cylinder away from the wall, climbed onto a stool, and struck the camera with the metal base.

The live feed broke into static.

“Can he get Noah out?” I asked.

Emily’s eyes remained fixed on the dead screen.

“He’s been preparing for this.”

“For how long?”

“Since before Noah was born.”

The tunnel door behind us began closing again.

Cole and his officer forced it wider while Claire supported Emily.

Brandon looked toward the pedestal.

“The ring can stop the purge.”

“How do you know?” I asked.

“Marian made me test the system.”

“With whose blood?”

He did not answer.

Emily did.

“Noah’s.”

My stomach turned.

The repeated bruising across Noah’s abdomen was not merely punishment or restraint. Meridian had used him in procedures connected to the biometric archive.

Brandon lowered his head.

“I thought they were medical tests.”

“You held him down,” Emily said.

“I was trying to keep him from moving.”

“He begged you to stop.”

Brandon looked at the hammer in his hand as if noticing it for the first time.

No apology could reach the damage he had done.

Still, he knew the system.

“What happens if the purge finishes?” Detective Cole asked.

“Every local server burns. Locks seal. Ventilation releases accelerant.”

“How much time?”

A digital countdown appeared above the pedestal.

Two minutes and thirty seconds.

The same countdown appeared on Emily’s phone.

At the hospital, Meridian was attempting to destroy Noah, Daniel, and the evidence phone simultaneously.

I held out the black ring.

“Tell me how to stop it.”

Brandon pointed toward the blood scanner.

“It needs a family match.”

“Mine?”

“Noah’s.”

Emily stepped between me and the pedestal.

“No.”

“He’s not here,” I said.

“The ring stores his sample,” Brandon answered. “Vale collected it during the tests.”

“Then why did Marian want my blood?”

“To connect Noah to the county cases through you. You processed Dana’s filings, and you’re his grandmother by family association. Meridian wanted a clean chain showing you fabricated the records to protect your daughter-in-law.”

Not biological grandmother.

But legally and emotionally, I was the person Noah had called.

The person he trusted.

That was enough for Meridian to use.

I placed the ring into the recess without touching the needle.

The pedestal lit.

A menu appeared.

ABORT PURGE.

OPEN MERIDIAN ARCHIVE.

TRANSFER PRIMARY AUTHORITY.

Only one option could be selected.

“If we abort,” Cole said, “we save the hospital.”

“And Meridian keeps the archive,” Emily answered.

“If we open it?” I asked.

“Evidence goes everywhere,” Brandon said. “But the purge continues.”

“And primary authority?”

He looked toward the camera.

“It gives control to whoever’s blood is entered.”

Marian wanted my blood so she could frame me while preserving Meridian under my identity.

The countdown reached one minute forty seconds.

I selected ABORT PURGE.

The system requested confirmation.

Before I pressed it, the tunnel behind us filled with footsteps.

Armed officers appeared at the entrance.

For one second, I believed Cole’s backup had arrived.

Then I saw the red Meridian symbol inside the lead man’s jacket.

They were not police.

Claire raised her cuffed hands.

“Cole.”

The detective turned.

One of the men fired.

The bullet struck the wall beside his head.

Brandon swung the hammer into the pedestal.

The scanner shattered.

The ring ejected across the floor.

The countdown stopped at one minute twelve seconds.

Then restarted twice as fast.

Marian’s voice came through every speaker.

“You have forced manual authorization.”

The wall behind Emily opened.

A second biometric pedestal emerged.

A woman stood beside it wearing dark clothes and Lauren Pike’s stolen red badge.

Patricia.

She held a small boy’s blood vial in one hand.

In the other, she held the pink phone taken from the hospital evidence locker.

She smiled at me.

“Choose carefully, Ruth. One contains Noah’s blood.”

She lifted the vial.

“The other contains every reason Meridian wants him dead.”
