Chapter 9 - The Recording Emily Feared

I left Noah with Dr. Carter and ran after Claire.
Every instinct screamed not to leave my grandson, but the black phone contained the first evidence created by Emily herself. If Vale destroyed it, Brandon’s story might survive.
Claire staggered ahead of me, one hand pressed to her side.
Dr. Vale disappeared through the operating room doors.
When Claire reached them, they locked.
She struck the glass.
“Martin!”
Inside, Dr. Vale held the black phone beneath a surgical lamp. He removed the back case and searched for the battery.
The model had a sealed body.
He grabbed a metal instrument from a tray.
I picked up a fire extinguisher and slammed its base against the narrow window.
The first strike cracked the glass.
The second broke it.
Dr. Vale stepped back.
I reached through and opened the inner handle.
Claire entered first.
She lunged for the phone, but Vale caught her by the throat and pushed her against an instrument cart.
I sprayed the extinguisher directly into his face.
White powder filled the room.
He released Claire and stumbled blindly.
The phone fell.
I grabbed it.
Vale recovered faster than I expected. He seized my cardigan and dragged me backward.
Claire struck his forearm with a metal tray.
His black-stone ring flew off and rolled beneath the operating table.
He stared after it.
Not like a man losing jewelry.
Like a man losing evidence.
I kicked the ring toward Claire.
“Take it.”
She snatched it from the floor.
Vale’s face became savage.
“You don’t know what that opens.”
“Then tell us,” I said.
He came toward me.
A voice spoke from the doorway.
“Stop.”
Dr. Carter stood there with Detective Cole and two officers.
The fake orderly was handcuffed behind them. Noah’s gurney remained with the second nurse farther down the corridor.
Vale lifted his hands.
“This woman attacked me.”
Detective Cole looked at the broken window, extinguisher dust, and phone in my grip.
“Everyone stays exactly where they are.”
“He needs surgery,” Dr. Carter said. “But not with this man.”
A second pediatric surgeon was being transported from another hospital under police escort.
The delay was dangerous, but handing Noah to Vale would have been worse.
Detective Cole took the black phone and placed it on an instrument table.
“Who owns this?”
“Emily,” I said.
Claire shook her head.
“I found it.”
“That wasn’t the question.”
Her silence made everyone look at her.
Cole asked, “Where is Emily Hayes?”
“I don’t know.”
“You told Ruth you helped her hide.”
“I helped her for one night.”
“Then what happened?”
Claire looked toward Dr. Vale.
“He found us.”
The surgeon smiled faintly.
Cole noticed.
“Cuff him.”
One officer moved behind Vale.
As the handcuffs closed, his expression remained calm.
“You have no idea who controls this hospital.”
The phone screen dimmed.
I touched it before it locked.
The recording labeled RUTH—DO NOT TRUST CLAIRE began playing.
Emily’s voice filled the operating room.
“If Ruth finds this, Claire has probably told her she tried to help me.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Emily continued.
“She did help at first. But she also gave Brandon access to my private messages, my bank account, and Noah’s school records. She said she was protecting us. She was really feeding information to someone called Meridian.”
“Meridian?” Detective Cole repeated.
Dr. Vale’s head turned sharply.
Emily’s recording continued.
“I don’t know whether Claire understands what Meridian is. I only know Brandon takes orders from them, and Dr. Vale cleans up anything that can be traced back to the children.”
Claire shook her head.
“I didn’t know.”
The recording went on.
“The black ring is not jewelry. It stores encrypted biometric access. Claire saw Vale use it to open the room beneath our garage.”
Claire looked at the ring in her hand.
The black stone glowed faintly against her palm.
A tiny green light appeared along its edge.
Dr. Vale’s calm vanished.
“Put it down.”
The phone emitted a notification.
BIOMETRIC KEY DETECTED.
A map appeared on-screen showing Brandon’s house.
Beneath the garage was a digital floor plan of three hidden rooms.
One room was marked RECORDING.
One was marked MEDICAL.
The third was marked HOLDING.
Inside the HOLDING room, a motion sensor flashed.
Someone was still moving down there.
Then the phone played a live audio feed.
A woman was breathing in the darkness.
She whispered one word.
“Ruth.”

Emily was alive.
