Chapter 7 - The Hand Beneath the Blanket

I threw myself across Noah’s legs.
My hand struck another wrist.
The person gripping his ankle tried to pull away, but I caught their sleeve and held on.
“Turn on the emergency light!” Dr. Carter shouted.
The second nurse used her phone flashlight.
A hospital orderly crouched between the two gurneys.
He wore a surgical mask and a blue cap pulled low over his forehead.
I recognized his eyes.
He had been standing near Brandon in the emergency room waiting area when we arrived.
At the time, I assumed he was another parent.
Now his hand was wrapped around my grandson’s ankle.
Dr. Carter shoved him against the elevator wall.
“Who are you?”
He swung at her.
The second nurse caught his forearm, and I drove my shoulder into his chest. He hit the wall hard enough to knock the breath from his lungs.
Claire reached from her stretcher and pulled off his mask.
A thin man in his late twenties glared at us.
No hospital identification.
No name stitched on his uniform.
The elevator remained suspended between floors.
The man smiled through clenched teeth.
“You should’ve let the father take him.”
I grabbed the collar of his scrubs.
“Where is Emily?”
His eyes moved toward Claire.
“She knows.”
Claire turned her face away.
The man laughed.
“Ask Aunt Claire what she traded.”
I looked at her.
“What does he mean?”
“Don’t listen to him.”
“She opened the basement,” he said. “She gave us the first phone.”
Claire’s monitor accelerated.
“I was trying to get Emily out.”
“You took her phone?”
“I took one of them.”
One of them.
The message in Brandon’s text had said he could not find the other one.
Emily had possessed at least two devices.
“Why?” I asked.
“Because Emily told me it held proof,” Claire said. “I hid it before Brandon searched me.”
“Where?”
She looked toward Noah.
I understood.
“In his jumpsuit?”
“No. That phone was already there.”
The man’s smile widened.
“Wrong phone, Grandma.”
Dr. Carter searched his pockets.
She found a folding knife, two zip ties, an access card, and a printed photograph.
The photograph showed Emily sitting on a basement floor beside a concrete wall. Her hands were bound in front of her, but she was looking directly at the camera.
Behind her hung a row of children’s drawings.
One showed Noah holding hands with a blonde woman beneath a large red sun.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written:
SHE TALKED AFTER THE SECOND DOSE.
The elevator speaker crackled.
A man’s voice came through.
“Release the emergency stop, Melissa.”
Dr. Carter went still.
She recognized the voice.
“Martin.”
Dr. Martin Vale.
The surgeon with the black-stone ring.
“We have a child bleeding internally,” Dr. Carter said.
“And I have the only operating room available.”
“You’re not touching him.”
“If you delay, his spleen ruptures. Then his death belongs to you.”
Noah looked up at her.
“Is he the bad doctor?”
Dr. Carter’s face tightened.
“You’ve seen him before?”
Noah nodded.
“At Daddy’s room.”
The man on the floor tried to move.
I tightened my grip.
“Who is he?” I asked.
Noah pointed toward the photograph.
“He gave Mommy the sleepy medicine.”
Dr. Carter pressed the elevator intercom.
“Martin, I’m calling police.”
“You already did. How has that worked for you?”
The speaker went dead.
The elevator lights returned.
We began moving upward without anyone releasing the emergency stop.
Dr. Carter pressed every floor button.
Nothing responded.
Someone had taken control of the elevator remotely.
Claire stared at the ceiling display.
“They’re sending us to surgery.”
The doors opened on the fourth floor.
The hallway beyond was dark except for surgical lights glowing through an open set of double doors.
Dr. Vale stood beneath them in green scrubs.
A silver ring with a black stone covered his right hand.
Behind him were two masked staff members.
He looked at Noah and smiled.
“Bring me the boy.”

Then the elevator doors began closing behind us, cutting off our escape.
