Chapter 1 - The Scratching Inside the Refrigerator

“There’s something alive in there.”
Walter Hayes froze in the waist-high weeds behind the abandoned farmhouse.
The rusted refrigerator lay on its back near the sagging porch, chained shut with an exterior hasp and padlock.
A faint scratching came from inside.
Then one weak whine.
Walter dropped to his knee and yanked the handle.
The lock snapped tight.
The door barely moved.
Behind him, Eleanor Price appeared in the porch doorway, clutching a dirty towel against her chest.
Walter slid his steel digging bar beneath the hasp.
The scratching suddenly stopped.
“Hold on!” he shouted. “I’m getting you out!”
He planted both boots in the mud and threw his weight against the bar.
Metal groaned.
His hands slipped.
The latch held.
Walter reset his grip, drove the bar deeper, and wrenched upward with every ounce of strength he had.
Screws tore from the refrigerator casing.
Rust exploded into the air.
The hasp twisted sideways.
Walter dropped the bar, seized the heavy door, and heaved it open.
Hot, rotten air escaped.
Inside, a golden-brown dog crouched on filthy blankets, panting so rapidly its entire body trembled.
Eleanor covered her mouth.
“Oh God… that’s Cooper.”
Walter lifted the dog carefully and lowered him onto a blanket.
He poured water into his palm.
As Cooper weakly drank, Walter found a worn leather collar beneath the matted fur.
He turned the metal tag toward the cloudy light.
Eleanor stepped off the porch.
The towel slipped from her hands.
Walter slowly raised his eyes.

“Why does this tag have your address?”
👉 Eleanor’s answer made Walter realize the dog had not wandered onto the abandoned property by accident.
