Chapter 14 - The Sale Calvin Had Arranged

The entry listed three items.
House.
Farmland.
Foreclosure parcel.
Walter stared at the final line.
“My property?”
Ruth examined the ledger.
Calvin had written an expected sale price beside the abandoned farmhouse Walter purchased.
But Calvin had never owned it.
“He planned to combine Eleanor’s property with yours,” Ruth said.
“How?”
Eleanor remembered Calvin pushing her to challenge the county auction.
He claimed the abandoned farmhouse had once belonged to Frank’s uncle and should revert to their family.
The claim was false.
But Calvin intended to file enough paperwork to delay Walter’s ownership, then offer both parcels to a commercial buyer as one development site.
The refrigerator had been left near the shared boundary.
If Cooper was discovered after Walter took possession, Calvin could claim Walter had placed the dog there.
“He wanted me blamed,” Walter said.
Ruth nodded.
“Or he wanted the animal found too late for anyone to identify when it happened.”
Eleanor began crying again.
“He used Cooper to frighten me and frame Walter at the same time.”
The scheme explained why Calvin had chosen the foreclosure property.
It was neglected.
Isolated.
Already filled with rusted appliances and discarded metal.
One more refrigerator would not attract attention.
Walter remembered Calvin’s confidence on the phone.
You can’t prove who put him there.
But the muddy tire tracks crossed from Eleanor’s land.
And Walter’s auction photographs, taken that morning before inspection, showed the refrigerator had not been there at sunrise.
Calvin had moved it after the sale became official.
Ruth looked through the financial records.
“We have a clear pattern now.”
Walter shook his head.
“Not enough. He’ll say Eleanor is confused and the documents belonged to Frank.”
Eleanor looked toward the clinic paperwork on the seat.

“Then let Cooper show them.”
👉 Cooper’s worn collar carried one more mark that connected Calvin directly to the refrigerator lock.
