Chapter 16 - The Fire Calvin Tried to Start

Walter stayed at the farmhouse after dark.

Not inside.

He parked near the county road with the headlights off and the doors locked.

Ruth had advised him not to confront Calvin.

Walter intended only to protect the property until the county secured it.

Shortly after midnight, headlights appeared on the service path.

Calvin’s truck stopped beside the rusted refrigerator.

He climbed out carrying a red gasoline can.

Walter started recording.

Calvin poured fuel across the dirty blankets and refrigerator casing.

He intended to destroy any remaining physical evidence.

Walter called emergency services and gave the location.

Then Calvin spotted the glow from Walter’s phone.

He charged toward the truck.

Walter locked the doors.

Calvin slammed both hands against the window.

“You ruined everything!”

Walter kept the camera steady.

“You did that yourself.”

Calvin struck the glass with the gasoline can.

It cracked but held.

“You think my mother will survive without me?”

“She survived despite you.”

Calvin raised the can again.

Sirens sounded in the distance.

His expression changed.

He ran back toward his truck.

But the muddy path had worsened after sunset.

His rear wheels spun.

The truck sank to its axle.

Calvin abandoned it and disappeared into the weeds before the first vehicle reached the property.

Walter did not follow.

He remained inside the locked truck until help arrived.

The refrigerator, fuel can, padlock, and tire tracks were secured.

By morning, Calvin had vanished.

Eleanor sat beside Cooper at the clinic.

The dog had finally lifted his head without assistance.

When Walter entered, Cooper’s tail tapped the blanket.

Eleanor smiled through tears.

Then Ruth called.

Calvin had left behind a duffel bag in his truck.

👉 Inside it were forged documents declaring Eleanor mentally incompetent—and a ticket showing where he planned to take her.
