Chapter 13 - Track Seven

They played the recording inside Walter’s truck.

Frank’s voice sounded weak but clear.

“You will not take this house from your mother.”

Calvin replied, “She won’t manage it without you.”

“She manages more than you think.”

“I can have her declared incompetent.”

“You’ll need evidence.”

“I’ll create it.”

Eleanor covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

Frank accused Calvin of stealing checks and opening credit accounts in his parents’ names.

Calvin laughed.

Then Frank mentioned Cooper.

“The dog sees everything you do.”

“He’s a dog.”

“He’s the reason your mother knows when you enter her room.”

“I can fix that.”

Walter looked at Eleanor.

Calvin had threatened Cooper years earlier.

Frank’s final words were directed toward his son.

“If anything happens to your mother or that dog, the records go to Ruth Delgado.”

Ruth paused the recording.

“Frank was my client.”

“You knew?” Eleanor asked.

“Only that he wanted documents preserved. He never told me where the originals were.”

The memory card was the backup.

The workshop case held the originals.

Calvin had returned after Frank’s death believing fear would be enough to gain control.

But Cooper continued alerting Eleanor whenever Calvin entered restricted rooms.

The dog was not simply a pet.

He was the one barrier Calvin could not manipulate.

Walter looked toward the house.

Calvin stood in the yard, pretending not to watch them.

Ruth examined the ledger.

It listed years of unauthorized withdrawals, forged checks, and debts tied to shell companies.

One company name matched the buyer on Eleanor’s one-dollar deed transfer.
