Chapter 6 - The Things Calvin Removed

Walter accelerated down the gravel road.
In the rearview mirror, Calvin stopped beside the rusted refrigerator.
He watched the truck until it vanished around the trees.
Eleanor pressed both hands together.
“You shouldn’t have said that to him.”
“Was I wrong?”
She stared ahead.
Walter repeated the question.
“Did Calvin lock Cooper inside?”
Her voice broke.
“Yes.”
Walter’s hands tightened around the steering wheel.
“Why?”
“Because Cooper barked.”
“That’s all?”
“Calvin hates noise.”
Cooper whimpered from the rear seat.
Walter slowed over a pothole.
“How long has Cooper lived with you?”
“Eleven years.”
“So he is your dog.”
“He belonged to my husband first.”
Eleanor explained that after her husband, Frank, died, Cooper became the only living thing left in the house that remembered him.
Calvin returned three weeks earlier claiming he had lost his job.
Within days, Eleanor’s phone disappeared.
Then her car keys.
Then family photographs.
“He said the house was cluttered,” she whispered.
“What else did he remove?”
“Frank’s tools. My bank statements. The deed folder.”
Walter glanced at her.
“Why the deed?”
“He wants me to sell.”
“Do you?”
“No.”
“Did Cooper interfere with that?”
Eleanor nodded.
“Cooper barked every time Calvin entered my bedroom. Yesterday he bit Calvin’s pant leg when Calvin took my jewelry box.”
“Did he break the skin?”
“No. He only pulled the fabric.”
“So Calvin punished him.”
Eleanor covered her face.
“I watched him drag Cooper outside.”
“And you did nothing.”
Her shoulders shook.
“He told me if I followed, he would put me in that refrigerator too.”
May you like
Walter looked at the bruises on her arm again.
👉 At the clinic, the veterinarian found proof Cooper had been confined before—and the older injuries led back to Eleanor’s house.
