Chapter 7 - The Marks Beneath Cooper’s Fur
The rural animal clinic rushed Cooper into an examination room.
Walter remained beside him until the staff asked for space.
Eleanor sat in the waiting room, still clutching Calvin’s towel.
Dr. Monroe returned twenty minutes later.
“Cooper is severely dehydrated and overheated, but he is responding to fluids.”
Walter exhaled for the first time since opening the refrigerator.
“Will he survive?”
“We’re cautiously optimistic.”
Eleanor began crying.
The veterinarian continued.
“There are no major fractures. But he has pressure sores around his neck and older bruising beneath the fur.”
“From the refrigerator?” Walter asked.
“Some are older.”
Dr. Monroe showed them photographs taken during the examination.
A narrow line of rubbed skin circled Cooper’s neck beneath the collar.
There were also callused marks on his front legs.
“Has he been chained?”
Eleanor stared at the floor.
“Sometimes.”
“How long?”
“Since Calvin came home.”
Walter looked at her.
“You said Cooper stayed inside.”
“He used to.”
Dr. Monroe’s tone remained professional.
“Someone has also limited his food. The weight loss did not happen overnight.”
Eleanor whispered, “Calvin said an old dog didn’t need much.”
Walter stood.
“You watched him starve Cooper?”
“I fed him when Calvin left.”
“That wasn’t enough.”
“I know.”
Her voice collapsed.
Walter wanted to shout.
But he saw that Eleanor already expected anger from every man in the room.
So he asked one question instead.
“Why didn’t you call for help?”
She looked at the clinic door.
“Because Calvin controls the landline, my mail, and the truck. He told everyone I’m forgetting things.”
Walter remembered the county auction.
Eleanor had called from a number he did not recognize.
“Whose phone did you use last night?”
“The old one Frank kept in his workshop.”
“What did you call me about?”
“The refrigerator.”
Walter stared at her.
