Chapter 5 - The Man in Eleanor’s House

Walter pointed toward the embroidered letters.

“Who is Calvin?”

Eleanor shoved the towel behind her back.

“My son.”

Walter knew she had a son, but he had never met him.

Eleanor once said Calvin worked out of state.

“How long has he been staying with you?”

“A few weeks.”

“Does he own a truck?”

She remained silent.

Walter looked again at the tracks.

“Dark pickup? Wide rear tires?”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Walter, take Cooper to the clinic.”

“You’re coming.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because Calvin will know I told you.”

Walter lowered his voice.

“You already told me.”

“No. You guessed.”

The back door of Eleanor’s house opened across the field.

A man stepped onto the porch.

Even from a distance, Walter could see the broad shoulders and shaved head.

Calvin looked toward Walter’s truck.

Eleanor’s entire body stiffened.

The man raised one hand.

Not a greeting.

A command.

Come back.

Eleanor began walking toward him.

Walter caught her elbow gently.

“You don’t have to go.”

“He’ll only get worse.”

“Has he hurt you?”

“No.”

“Has he threatened you?”

“No.”

“Did he lock Cooper in that refrigerator?”

Eleanor’s mouth trembled.

Across the field, Calvin started down the steps.

Walter opened the driver’s door.

“Get in.”

Eleanor shook her head.

“Now.”

Something in Walter’s voice broke through her fear.

She climbed into the passenger seat.

Walter started the engine.

Calvin reached the edge of the service path and shouted.

“Where are you taking my mother?”

Walter shifted into gear.

“To save the dog you tried to kill.”

Calvin’s face changed.

He ran toward the truck.

👉 Walter drove away before Calvin reached them—but Eleanor revealed Cooper was not the first thing her son had tried to make disappear.
