Chapter 8 - The Call Walter Misunderstood

Walter remembered the conversation clearly.

Eleanor had asked whether he planned to inspect the backyard.

He said yes.

She asked what time.

He said around noon.

Then she said, “Make sure you bring something strong for the old appliances.”

Walter assumed she meant tools for clearing scrap.

Now he understood.

“You were telling me to bring the digging bar.”

Eleanor nodded.

“Calvin was in the kitchen.”

“Why didn’t you say Cooper was trapped?”

“He took the phone from me twice. I pretended I was asking about the auction.”

“Did Calvin know I was coming?”

“Yes.”

“Then why did he leave Cooper there?”

“He thought you wouldn’t open the refrigerator until the cleanup crew arrived next week.”

Walter’s stomach tightened.

Cooper would never have survived.

“What changed?”

Eleanor looked at him.

“You came early.”

Walter usually inspected new properties after lunch.

That morning, a storm warning convinced him to go before the ground became worse.

One small decision had saved Cooper’s life.

Eleanor wiped her eyes.

“I went onto the porch when I saw your truck. I had the towel because I planned to get Cooper out after Calvin left.”

“But the refrigerator was locked.”

“I found the key.”

She reached into her pocket.

A tiny brass key rested in her palm.

Walter stared at it.

“Why didn’t you unlock it?”

“I heard Calvin’s truck coming back.”

“You could have handed it to me.”

“I was afraid he would see.”

Walter took the key.

It fit the padlock perfectly.

Eleanor had stood only feet away with the means to open the refrigerator.

Yet fear had paralyzed her.

Dr. Monroe returned carrying Cooper’s collar in a clear bag.

“We found something hidden beneath the leather.”

It was not another tag.

May you like

It was a small memory card wrapped in tape.

👉 Frank had hidden something on Cooper’s collar before he died—and Calvin had been searching the house to find it.
