Chapter 20 - The Garden Where Cooper Survived

The abandoned backyard no longer existed.
Walter restored the white farmhouse instead of demolishing it.
He repaired the sagging porch.
Removed the rusted grill.
Cleared the discarded metal.
And turned the overgrown land into a community garden.
Sunflowers grew where the refrigerator had once rested.
A wooden bench stood nearby beneath a young maple tree.
Cooper walked beside Walter through the garden.
His golden-brown coat had grown back thick and clean.
He moved more slowly than a young dog, but his steps were steady.
Eleanor followed carrying a fresh blue blanket.
No stained towel.
No trembling hands.
She spread the blanket beneath the maple tree.
Cooper circled twice before lowering himself onto it.
His collar held a new tag.
COOPER.
Beneath his name were two addresses.
Eleanor’s sister’s farmhouse.
And Walter’s restored property.
“He should have somewhere safe no matter where he is,” Eleanor said.
Walter nodded.
Eleanor had regained legal control of her home and finances.
She chose not to return immediately.
The house held too many memories of fear.
Instead, she leased it to a young family and used the income to rebuild her life.
She volunteered twice a week at the animal clinic.
Not to erase her guilt.
To transform it into responsibility.
Walter opened the original foreclosure folder that had been sitting in his truck the day he found Cooper.
Inside was the first photograph he took of the property.
Rusted refrigerator.
Tall weeds.
Broken chairs.
A yard everyone had abandoned.
He placed it beside a new photograph of the garden.
Eleanor looked at the contrast.
“You saved more than Cooper that day.”
Walter shook his head.
“Cooper scratched.”
“What?”
“He kept scratching when anyone else might have stopped.”
They looked toward the dog.
Cooper opened one eye, saw them nearby, and rested his head again.
The metal tag on his collar glinted in the afternoon sun.
The old tag had exposed a terrible secret.
The new one carried something simpler.
May you like
Proof that he belonged somewhere safe.
Do you believe Eleanor deserved a chance to rebuild Cooper’s trust after fear kept her silent?
