Chapter 4 - The Name She Would Not Say

Walter placed Cooper across the rear seat on folded moving blankets.
He left the door open for air while Eleanor stood beside the truck.
“Who put him in there?”
“I don’t know.”
“You just said someone would be angry that he survived.”
“I’m confused.”
“You’re terrified.”
Eleanor folded the dirty towel over and over.
Walter recognized the motion.
His late wife had done the same thing whenever she was trying not to cry.
“Is this person inside your house?”
Eleanor looked toward her property.
That was answer enough.
Walter reached for his phone.
She grabbed his wrist.
“Please.”
He looked down at her hand.
She released him immediately.
“You cannot call anyone yet.”
“A dog was locked inside a metal box during summer.”
“I know.”
The words escaped before she could stop them.
Walter stepped closer.
“How do you know?”
Tears filled her eyes.
“I heard him.”
“When?”
“Last night.”
Walter stared at her.
“You heard Cooper trapped in there all night?”
“I thought he was in the shed.”
“You knew he was missing.”
“I couldn’t see from my bedroom.”
“You could have walked over.”
Her face twisted with shame.
“You think I didn’t want to?”
Walter looked at the fading bruises along her forearm.
They were partly hidden beneath the oversized sleeve.
His anger shifted.
Not gone.
Redirected.
“Who stopped you?”
Eleanor backed away.
“No one.”
Walter gently closed the truck door.
Then he noticed the dirty towel she held had golden fur stuck to one corner.
Cooper’s fur.
And beneath the dirt was a dark embroidered name.
May you like
CALVIN.
👉 Eleanor had not brought the towel for Cooper—she had grabbed it from the room of the man she was too afraid to name.
