Chapter 12 - Frank’s Hidden Floor

Walter, Ruth, and Eleanor returned to the property together.

The men from the gardening cooperative remained near the road, recording from a safe distance.

Calvin stood beside the burn barrel.

He smiled when he saw them.

“You brought a lawyer?”

Ruth stepped forward.

“We are here to retrieve Eleanor’s personal property.”

“This house belongs to me.”

“The transfer is disputed.”

Calvin looked at Walter.

“And you’re trespassing.”

Walter pointed toward the abandoned farmhouse.

“I own the land beside yours. The tire tracks from your truck cross my property.”

Calvin’s smile faded.

Eleanor’s hands shook.

But she walked past him toward the workshop.

He grabbed her upper arm.

Walter moved instantly.

He did not strike Calvin.

He placed one hand between Calvin’s wrist and Eleanor’s arm, forcing a clean separation.

“Do not touch her.”

Calvin squared his shoulders.

Walter did not move.

Ruth raised her phone.

“You are being recorded.”

Calvin stepped back.

Inside the workshop, drawers had been emptied and floorboards pulled up.

The metal box lay open.

Most of the contents were gone.

Eleanor crossed to the steel cabinet.

“Frank said never move this unless I had no other choice.”

Walter and one of the gardeners shifted the heavy cabinet aside.

Beneath it was a second narrow panel.

Eleanor removed a screw hidden inside an old hinge.

The board lifted.

Inside lay a waterproof case.

Calvin rushed toward them.

Ruth blocked the doorway.

“You stay outside.”

Eleanor opened the case.

It contained original property deeds, bank statements, a handwritten ledger, and a small voice recorder.

On top was a note from Frank.
