Chapter 1 - The Tablet in Maya’s Hands
“She is not a safe mother for my daughter.”
Julian Mercer stood before the judge in his tailored gray wedding suit, one hand pointed toward Claire as if she were a criminal.
The crowded family courtroom went silent.
Claire sat beside her attorney, her hands folded tightly over the divorce documents in her lap.
She did not argue.
She did not cry.
She only looked at Maya.
Their six-year-old daughter sat near the witness stand in a pink dress, clutching a worn stuffed rabbit against her chest.
Julian smiled when the judge glanced toward the child.
Then he bent slightly and whispered, “Remember what we practiced.”
Maya’s small body stiffened.
Claire saw fear flash across her daughter’s face.
Julian had spent three months telling the court that Claire was unstable, forgetful, and dangerous.
He had submitted photographs of a burned kitchen towel.
A medical report claiming Claire suffered from severe emotional episodes.
A statement from the family nanny saying Claire once left Maya alone overnight.
Every accusation was false.
But Julian was wealthy.
His family owned hospitals, real estate, and half the businesses in their county.
Claire had only her word.
Until Maya slowly stood.
She held a tablet against her stomach with one arm and carried her rabbit in the other.
“Your Honor,” Maya whispered, “I need to show you something.”
The judge leaned forward.
Julian’s confident expression vanished.
“Where did you get this?” the judge asked.
Maya looked directly at her father.
“Daddy said nobody would ever see it.”
Julian moved toward her.
“Maya, give that to me.”
The bailiff stepped between them.
The judge accepted the tablet and touched the screen.
A video began to play.
Julian’s voice filled the courtroom.
“Tell them Mommy left you alone. If you forget, you’ll never see your rabbit again.”
Claire covered her mouth.
Julian went pale.
Then another voice sounded from the recording.
A woman Claire recognized immediately.
The family nanny.
“What happens after we take Maya away from her?”
Julian answered with a laugh.
