Chapter 8 - The Missing Night

Claire called Ethan.
His number was disconnected.
His architecture firm had closed two years earlier.
Daniel traced his last known address to a small town three hours away.
Claire drove there with Rachel and Detective Ortiz.
The apartment was empty.
A neighbor said Ethan left suddenly the week before.
“He looked scared,” she said. “Kept asking if a gray sedan was parked outside.”
Inside the apartment, investigators found photographs of Maya hidden beneath a loose floorboard.
Maya at school.
Maya at a playground.
Maya leaving ballet class.
Claire felt sick.
Ethan had been watching her daughter.
Then she found a sealed letter addressed to her.
Claire,
You may hate me after reading this.
The night Julian disappeared during your pregnancy timeline was not what you remember.
You were drugged at the Mercer charity gala.
I found you unconscious in a hotel room.
Julian arrived before the ambulance.
He forced me to leave.
Weeks later, you told me you were pregnant.
I suspected Maya might be mine because Julian had been traveling for months, but I never touched you that night.
I stayed away because Julian threatened Rebecca.
Claire read the letter twice.
Ethan was not claiming to be Maya’s father.
He was saying Julian had manipulated the timeline.
Rachel examined the hotel receipt attached to the letter.
The gala occurred nine months and two weeks before Maya’s birth.
Claire remembered feeling dizzy after one glass of champagne.
Julian told her she fainted from exhaustion.
She woke the next morning in their home.
No doctor was called.
Ortiz found another item in Ethan’s apartment.
A prepaid phone contained photographs of Rebecca alive.
The latest image was taken two weeks earlier.
She stood beside Ethan near an abandoned farmhouse.
In the background was Julian’s gray sedan.
A video file showed Rebecca speaking into the camera.
“Claire, Julian did not take Maya because he loves her. He needs legal custody before her seventh birthday.”
The video ended abruptly.
Claire checked the date.
Maya would turn seven in twelve days.
“Why does her birthday matter?” Claire asked.
Rachel searched Harrison’s trust documents.
Then she found a clause.
