Chapter 11 - The Clinic Beneath the Hospital

The original fertility records were stored beneath a private Mercer hospital.

Rebecca had learned about the archive while imprisoned.

Julian’s uncle kept documents there that could not appear in company systems.

Federal investigators obtained a warrant.

Claire accompanied them because several files required her identity verification.

The archive contained signed consent forms, embryo records, billing statements, and genetic reports.

Claire’s signature appeared on every page.

All were forged.

A hidden camera recording from the clinic showed Julian speaking with Dr. Nathan Cole, the fertility specialist.

“She doesn’t need to know whose embryo it is,” Julian said.

Dr. Cole hesitated.

“This is illegal.”

Julian placed an envelope on the desk.

“It becomes legal when no one complains.”

The video proved medical fraud.

It also proved Julian planned Maya’s conception for money.

Claire watched the screen with tears in her eyes.

Maya had been wanted by Claire.

Loved by Claire.

But Julian had viewed her as an investment before she was even born.

Daniel found another folder labeled C.M.

It contained records of medications prescribed to Claire during pregnancy.

One drug could cause memory loss and confusion.

Julian had been dosing her.

The missing night at the charity gala was explained.

Claire had not betrayed anyone.

She had been drugged to make the false treatment timeline easier to control.

Detective Ortiz discovered payments from Julian to Dr. Cole continuing until the present.

The most recent transfer occurred two days earlier.

Before investigators could arrest the doctor, the hospital fire alarm activated.

Smoke filled the lower hallway.

Claire recognized the tactic.

Julian had used the same distraction at the bank.

Daniel rushed toward the archive exit.

The steel door locked automatically.

Someone had triggered the emergency containment system.

Through the security window, Claire saw Dr. Cole standing on the other side.

He held a gasoline can.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “Julian said my family would be safe if the records disappeared.”

Claire lifted her phone and recorded him.

“Your family won’t be safe if you murder us.”

Dr. Cole began crying.

Then a hand appeared behind him.

Julian struck him with a metal bar.

The doctor collapsed.

Julian looked through the glass at Claire.

“You should have let me take custody.”

👉 Julian had escaped court supervision, entered his own hospital, and trapped Claire inside the archive he intended to burn.
