Chapter 18 - Rebecca’s Verdict
“Guilty of attempted murder.”
Rebecca closed her eyes.
She did not smile.
No verdict could return the years she lost.
But Julian could no longer tell the world she imagined what happened.
The jury also convicted Evelyn of unlawful confinement and conspiracy.
Because she cooperated, rescued Maya during the kidnapping, and provided evidence, prosecutors recommended a reduced sentence.
Evelyn accepted responsibility.
“I deserve whatever the court decides,” she said.
Rebecca asked the judge not to erase Evelyn’s guilt.
But she did not request the maximum punishment.
“I don’t want another person locked away forever because this family confused pain with justice,” Rebecca said.
Evelyn received five years, with part of the sentence eligible for supervised release due to age and cooperation.
Dr. Cole received twelve years and permanently lost his medical license.
The bribed employees and court officials received separate sentences.
Julian faced the judge last.
He showed no remorse.
He accused Claire of destroying Maya’s family.
Judge Brooks looked at him for a long moment.
“You used marriage as a contract for control. You used medicine as a weapon. You used a child as a financial instrument. And when truth entered this courtroom, you tried to frighten a six-year-old into carrying your lies.”
She sentenced him to sixty-eight years in prison.
His assets connected to fraud were seized.
The Mercer hospital network was placed under independent oversight.
The $60 million trust remained protected for Maya.
Claire could use limited funds only for Maya’s education, medical care, and welfare.
She chose not to touch the principal.
Outside court, reporters asked Maya how she felt.
Claire blocked the cameras.
“She is a child, not a headline.”
Rebecca stood nearby.
For years, Julian had controlled every version of her story.
Now she was free to choose silence.
Ethan emerged from the courthouse entrance.
He had been located by federal agents and placed in protective custody.
Rebecca ran toward her brother.
They held each other for the first time in eleven years.
Claire watched Maya smile.
Then Rachel handed Claire a final document from Harrison’s estate.
