Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Never Left
Police searched Julian’s car but found no flash drive.
He denied starting the bank alarm.
Security footage showed a masked maintenance worker entering the utility room minutes before the smoke began.
The worker escaped through a service entrance.
Julian had planned the distraction.
But Claire had photographed every document before leaving the vault.
More importantly, Harrison’s videos had automatically copied to Rachel’s laptop the moment the drive was connected.
Julian did not know that.
Detective Samuel Ortiz reopened Rebecca’s missing-person case.
He visited Claire’s home that evening.
“Rebecca’s family always believed Julian was involved,” he said. “But Harrison refused to testify.”
Claire showed him the video diary.
Ortiz watched silently.
Then he placed an old envelope on the table.
“This arrived at the department three months after Rebecca disappeared.”
The letter was unsigned.
It claimed Rebecca had survived the crash and was hiding because Julian threatened her younger sister.
The detectives at the time dismissed it.
“Why?”
“Because the letter contained details only Rebecca should have known, but it was mailed from inside a psychiatric hospital owned by the Mercer family.”
Claire remembered Julian’s false medical report against her.
“What hospital?”
“Greenwood Behavioral Center.”
The facility had closed six years earlier after multiple patient-abuse complaints.
Julian’s uncle served on its board.
Maya entered the room wearing pajamas.
She held her rabbit carefully.
“Mommy, I know the lady in the picture.”
Claire showed her Rebecca’s photograph.
“Where have you seen her?”
“At Grandma Evelyn’s house.”
Julian’s mother lived alone outside the city.
Maya explained that a woman with the same face appeared in a locked upstairs room during a family Christmas party.
“She told me not to tell Daddy.”
Claire knelt in front of her.
“When was this?”
“Last Christmas.”
Rebecca had disappeared eleven years earlier.
If Maya was right, she was still alive.
The next morning, police obtained a warrant for Evelyn Mercer’s estate.
Julian arrived before them.
By the time officers entered, the upstairs room was empty.
The bed was warm.
A broken chain remained attached to the wall.
On the floor lay a bracelet engraved with Rebecca’s initials.
Then Claire noticed fresh writing scratched into the wooden baseboard.
