Chapter 13 - Maya’s Second Recording
Julian demanded three things.
Claire had to withdraw the custody accusations.
She had to authorize his control of Maya’s trust.
And Rebecca had to surrender every remaining copy of the evidence.
Otherwise, he would disappear with Maya.
Claire kept him talking while police traced the call.
“You said you loved her.”
“I do.”
“You used her before she was born.”
“I created her future.”
“No. You created an account.”
Julian’s jaw tightened.
Behind him, Maya hugged her rabbit.
Claire noticed the toy’s left ear blinking faintly.
Maya had activated the hidden phone.
The same device Julian used to threaten Claire after the bank.
Julian did not know police had modified it into a tracker.
Claire shifted her attention toward Maya.
“Sweetheart, do you remember our breathing game?”
Maya nodded.
“Four slow breaths.”
She understood.
Stay calm.
Wait.
Julian pulled her closer.
“Stop coaching her.”
Evelyn stood near the door, trembling.
She had helped Julian enter the safe house because she believed he only wanted to speak with Maya.
Now she realized he planned to kidnap her.
“This has gone far enough,” Evelyn said.
Julian turned on her.
“You started this family’s habit of hiding inconvenient women.”
Evelyn recoiled.
He was right.
She had helped imprison Rebecca.
She had protected Julian after the crash.
Her silence had trained him to believe consequences were optional.
Evelyn moved toward Maya.
Julian raised a gun.
Claire heard Rachel gasp.
Maya slowly placed her rabbit on a table.
The hidden camera inside the toy captured everything.
“Daddy,” she said, “are you going to hurt Grandma too?”
Julian looked down at her.
“I’m protecting us.”
“Like you protected Mommy?”
His face changed.
Maya continued.
“You said after Mommy died, nobody could stop you.”
Julian froze.
He had said it before.
Maya remembered.
Now she was making him repeat it.
“You weren’t supposed to hear that.”
“But I did.”
Police vehicles surrounded the house.
Julian heard the sirens.
He grabbed Maya and ran toward the back door.
Evelyn stepped in front of him.
“You are not taking her.”
Julian struck his own mother and pushed her down the stairs.
