Chapter 3 - The Blue Folder

Claire took Maya home under police escort.
The house felt different the moment they entered.
Cabinet doors stood open.
Desk drawers had been pulled out.
The lock on Claire’s home office had been broken.
Someone had searched the house while they were in court.
Maya held Claire’s hand.
“Was Daddy here?”
“I don’t know.”
Claire checked the security system.
The camera archive had been erased.
Only Julian knew the administrator code.
Rachel arrived with a private security consultant named Daniel Reyes.
He examined the broken lock.
“This wasn’t a robbery,” he said. “They ignored jewelry and electronics. They were looking for paperwork.”
Claire thought about the blue folder.
She had never seen one.
But Julian had controlled all family finances during their ten-year marriage.
He gave Claire a household allowance despite the fact that she had helped build his first company.
Before Maya was born, Claire worked as an interior architect.
She redesigned Julian’s failing luxury apartment project and helped him secure investors.
He promised her half the company.
After the wedding, he told her the paperwork was being finalized.
It never was.
Maya sat on the couch with her rabbit.
“Grandpa put the folder behind the picture.”
“What picture?”
“The one with the boat.”
Claire searched the downstairs study.
A framed photograph of Julian and his father, Harrison Mercer, hung above the fireplace.
Behind it was an empty wall safe.
The safe door stood open.
Julian had already found it.
Then Maya pulled the rabbit’s zipper open.
Inside the stuffed toy was a tiny silver key.
“Grandpa gave me this before he went to heaven,” she said. “He said only give it to you when Daddy got mean.”
Harrison Mercer had died eight months earlier after a sudden stroke.
Julian said his father had left no personal message for Claire.
The key had a bank logo engraved on one side.
Daniel recognized it.
“Safe-deposit box.”
Claire’s phone rang.
Julian’s name appeared on the screen.
She answered on speaker.
His voice was calm again.
“Whatever Maya gave you belongs to my family.”
Claire stared at the key.
“Then why did your father hide it inside her rabbit?”
Julian’s breathing changed.

“If you open that box, Claire, I’ll make sure Maya watches you lose everything.”
👉 Harrison had hidden the key from his own son, and Julian was terrified of what Claire might find inside the bank.
