Chapter 12 - The Fire Julian Started

Julian poured gasoline along the hallway.

Claire searched for another exit.

The archive had no windows.

Daniel found an air vent, but it was too narrow for an adult.

The federal agents tried to break the steel door.

Julian ignited the fuel.

Flames raced across the floor.

Smoke pushed through the seams.

Claire called Maya.

Rachel answered from the safe house.

“You need to get out.”

“I’m trying.”

Maya’s voice came through the phone.

“Mommy?”

Claire forced herself to sound calm.

“I love you more than anything.”

“Are you coming home?”

“Yes.”

Claire refused to let Julian take that promise from her.

She remembered Harrison’s video describing old service tunnels beneath Mercer buildings.

She searched the archive shelves.

Behind a row of boxes was a metal panel.

Daniel forced it open.

A narrow maintenance corridor stretched into darkness.

The agents carried Dr. Cole through the opening after pulling him beneath the door before the flames spread.

They escaped moments before the archive ceiling collapsed.

Outside, Julian’s car sped away from the hospital.

Police issued a statewide alert.

Dr. Cole survived.

At the hospital, he gave a full confession.

Julian had paid him to forge Claire’s consent, manipulate the embryo transfer, and create false psychiatric reports.

He also admitted Julian planned to remove Claire permanently after gaining custody.

“What does permanently mean?” Detective Ortiz asked.

Dr. Cole looked ashamed.

“He asked me for a drug that would make an accidental overdose look natural.”

Claire felt no surprise anymore.

Only clarity.

Julian had not simply wanted to humiliate her.

He intended to kill her once the court gave him Maya.

Later that night, Claire received a video call from an unknown number.

Julian appeared on-screen.

Behind him, Maya’s safe-house bedroom was visible.

Claire’s heart stopped.

Maya stood beside him, still holding her rabbit.

Julian pressed one hand against her shoulder.

“You froze the trust,” he said. “Now you’re going to unfreeze it.”

Claire looked toward Rachel.

The attorney rushed to call security.

Julian smiled.

“You trusted the wrong person with the safe-house address.”

Then Evelyn Mercer stepped into view behind him.

👉 Julian’s mother had betrayed Maya’s location, and now Claire’s daughter was trapped with the man who had built his fortune around her life.
