Chapter 2 - The Lie Behind the Custody Case

The judge paused the video.
No one moved.
Julian stared at the tablet as if it were a weapon.
His attorney stood quickly.
“Your Honor, we have no information about how this recording was obtained or whether it has been edited.”
Judge Eleanor Brooks did not look at him.
She looked at Maya.
“Did you record this yourself?”
Maya nodded.
“Daddy gave me the tablet for cartoons. I pressed the red button because he was yelling.”
Claire felt something inside her break.
Her daughter had been frightened enough to record her own father.
Julian tried to smile.
“Maya is confused. She doesn’t understand what she heard.”
“I understand,” Maya said quietly.
The entire courtroom seemed to stop breathing.
Judge Brooks ordered the bailiff to take the tablet into evidence.
Then she suspended Julian’s request for emergency custody.
Julian’s face tightened.
“This is outrageous. Claire has manipulated our daughter.”
Claire finally stood.
“I didn’t know that video existed.”
Julian looked at her with pure hatred.
For years, he had hidden that expression behind expensive gifts, charming apologies, and public affection.
Now everyone could see it.
The judge ordered Maya to remain temporarily with Claire while a forensic specialist examined the tablet.
Julian was given supervised visitation only.
Outside the courtroom, reporters crowded the hallway.
Julian’s family attorney pulled him toward a private conference room.
Claire knelt beside Maya.
“You were very brave.”
Maya hugged the rabbit.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you before.”
“You never have to apologize for being scared.”
Maya looked over Claire’s shoulder.
Julian stood at the end of the hallway.
He was no longer pretending.
He pointed at Maya, then at Claire, before drawing one finger slowly across his throat.
Claire turned cold.
Her attorney, Rachel Simmons, saw it too.
“We need to document that,” Rachel said.
Before Claire could respond, Maya whispered, “Mommy, that’s not the worst video.”
Claire looked down.
“There are more?”
Maya nodded.

“One has Grandpa in it. Daddy told him you couldn’t be allowed to find the blue folder.”
👉 Claire had never heard of a blue folder, but Julian had apparently built his custody scheme to keep her from discovering it.
