Chapter 1 - The Cruelest Introduction

The baby bottle hit the hospital floor with a hard plastic crack.

It rolled once beneath the black stroller, spilling milk across the polished blue tiles.

Every patient in the pediatric waiting area turned.

Dr. Kirsten Sinclair stood in the center of the corridor, one hand wrapped around her taupe handbag, staring at the husband who had abandoned her eighteen months earlier.

Connor Fleming adjusted his expensive gray suit and smiled toward the growing audience.

“I finally have the family you never could.”

Beside the stroller, Melinda Travis froze on her hands and knees.

Kirsten’s former best friend.

Connor’s new wife.

And the mother of the blond one-year-old boy watching Kirsten with wide blue eyes.

Kirsten looked at the child.

Something about his face stopped her breath.

The small curve of his upper lip.

The pale birthmark beneath his left ear.

A mark Kirsten had seen once before—in a photograph locked inside a fertility clinic file.

Connor leaned closer, eager to see her collapse.

Kirsten slowly lifted her eyes.

“Really?”

Her voice was so calm that Connor’s smile faltered.

Then Kirsten noticed Melinda staring past her shoulder.

Not at Connor.

At the glass doors behind them.

And all the color had drained from Melinda’s face.

👉 Melinda wasn’t afraid of Kirsten—she was terrified of the two older men walking into the corridor.
