Chapter 12 - Melinda Chooses a Side

Connor grabbed the stroller handle.
“We’re leaving.”
Melinda placed both hands over his.
“No.”
Connor stared at her.
“What did you say?”
“I said no.”
The word trembled, but it did not break.
Connor leaned close.
“Without me, you have nothing.”
Melinda flinched.
Kirsten recognized the sentence.
Connor had said a version of it to her during their marriage.
You need me to manage the money.
You need me to speak to the clinic.
You’re too emotional to make this decision.
Melinda slowly removed Connor’s hands from the stroller.
“My father has copies of the bills.”
Connor’s face emptied.
Melinda continued.
“And I saved your messages.”
Walter closed his eyes with relief.
Connor’s voice dropped.
“You promised you deleted them.”
“I lied.”
For the first time, Melinda looked directly at Kirsten.
“He told me the embryo would be destroyed if we didn’t use it. He said you had abandoned it.”
Kirsten swallowed the pain.
“Why didn’t you ask me?”
“Because I was afraid you would say no.”
The honesty was ugly.
