Chapter 3 - The Marriage That Broke Quietly

Eighteen months earlier, Connor had packed his clothes while Kirsten was working a thirty-hour hospital shift.
He left his wedding ring on the kitchen counter.
Beside it was a note.
I can’t keep waiting for a life that may never happen.
Kirsten had undergone two exhausting rounds of fertility treatment.
The first failed.
The second produced three healthy embryos, but doctors advised delaying implantation after Kirsten developed a serious thyroid condition.
The embryos remained frozen.
Kirsten believed Connor understood.
He had held her after every injection.
He had told her they were a team.
Then he left.
Three weeks later, Melinda stopped answering Kirsten’s calls.
Two months after that, Connor and Melinda announced their engagement.
And six months later, Melinda appeared in photographs visibly pregnant.
Kirsten did the math.
It hurt, but the timeline seemed possible.
She convinced herself the child was Connor’s.
She forced herself not to look at the photographs again.
But now, standing in the hospital corridor, Kirsten remembered something her fertility specialist had said years earlier.
“Embryos can preserve family traits more clearly than people expect.”
The baby beneath the stroller canopy had Kirsten’s mother’s eyes.

And the same birthmark Kirsten’s older brother had carried before he died as an infant.
👉 The child Connor used to humiliate her carried a family mark that should not have belonged to Melinda at all.
