Chapter 11 - The Document He Needed

Kirsten looked toward the pediatric reception desk.

“What appointment did they have today?”

The receptionist hesitated.

Arthur answered.

“A records transfer consultation.”

Connor had requested copies of the child’s complete medical file.

He had also requested that the boy’s Boston physicians release responsibility to a private clinic overseas.

Melinda stared at her husband.

“You told me the Swiss clinic had better specialists.”

“It does.”

Arthur shook his head.

“You selected a clinic outside the jurisdiction investigating the embryo transfer.”

Connor’s composure broke.

“You cannot investigate a private family decision!”

Kirsten stepped forward.

“You forged my consent, used my genetic material and concealed my medical history from my child’s doctors.”

Connor laughed sharply.

“Your child?”

The waiting room recoiled at his tone.

Kirsten did not.

She looked at the toddler, whose small fingers now curled around Walter’s hand.

“I don’t know what the court will call me yet,” she said. “But I know what you stole.”

Connor’s face hardened.

“You think you can take him from Melinda?”

Kirsten looked at her former friend.

Melinda was crying silently, terrified of losing the little boy she had carried and loved.

“No,” Kirsten said. “I think you’ve spent years making women believe motherhood is something you can give or take.”

👉 Kirsten’s answer stunned Melinda—because Kirsten was not seeking revenge against the only mother the child had ever known.
